Best Tricks Bella and I just finished a puppy training class and the last week was fun tricks. She got spin pretty well, but shake and roll over are not going well. I was wondering what good tricks your yorkies have learned. What's the cutest? Also, any suggestions on roll over? She jumps for the treat as soon as it gets near here and she stands up (which prevents her rolling over). A couple of times we did manage to get her to roll over, but its definitely not constant. Shake is just going really slow. She'll let me take her paw, but she's still not offering it to me. Well, anything you've got would be great!

My personal favorite is sit up, with both little front feet held up. That's one of the first tricks I taught Ollie (even before down and stay ) Too cute!! I'm also a fan of Bang! (Play dead) but I'm not even sure how to tackle that...

We use would you rather be a cat or a dead dog and the cue word is dead dog. Seen as it potitically incorrect to "teach shooting of guns or point a fingre gun like" to kids in dog training classes... ugh what you have to think of sometimes. JL

My last two dogs were untrained in advanced obedience/tricks, but my first dog, a Chow mix, was so well trained she could walk herself. I would put the leash (folded) in her mouth and she would walk alongside me. She'd "walk" other dogs, too.

| For the roll over trick with Mahina I kinda followed this video but not totally... You can find a lot of training videos on youtube. I'm more of a visual learner, so I don't know if I'm about to explain the trick very well. I taught her how to lie down first then I would take the treat and kind of bring it around to her shoulders so that she would follow it. Then I would bring it around back towards me and this would cause her to roll over. You kind of just lead her into the roll over. I never touched her just lured her and I've never used a clicker although it's highly recommended. I'd say this trick was one of the harder ones to do with her as, like you said with your dog she would jump up. Usually she gets a trick within 10-20 trys... this one took longer then that. But now for a treat she'll go into roll over mode without being asked (she doesn't get a treat for something she wasn't asked to do... unless it's a fairly new trick, like we're learning shake right now.) I think yorkies are very smart... but stubborn! Use a trick your dog goes crazy over. I've got my girl to sit, lie down, roll over, circles (working on it), shake (working on it), crawl, get it, bring it, go around (on the ramp), high five. I have to teach her how to stay.... not so easy with her.

I just taught Lexi roll over! I used a technique like the previous poster's. I also have a problem with her jumping at the treat. I try to be firm, and if she jumps a few times, I put the treat away and try a little later. I do sit. Down. (Treat to floor by nose) Then while she is down, I take the treat that is by her nose and kind of circle it around her head. She follows it with her head, which causes her to roll over. Of course, now when I try to teach her "paw", she rolls over instead!
