Just bought a yorkie for my wife! potty problems :( Well i'll give you a bit of background information in order to hopefully find someone who can give me a good answer to this. I'm in the US Airforce and i'm currently stationed in England. I'm military police and I work alot and i'm frequently away for training/deployments. My wife therefore is alone alot and has wanted a yorkie for awhile. We researched and finally found a local breeder so I got her an early christmas present. My yorkie is 7 months old and his name is Oliver, I've never had a tiny dog(5 lbs) before and I thought i'd hate it but actually I like him. He's very affectionate and he's also outgoing. He likes to play and has an all around good personality. The breeder we bought him from wasn't very specific on his potty training, she said he had minimal training and that's about it. I don't really wanna call her and inquire about it so I started researching online and found this site. So basically I'm new to this whole inside the house small dog thing. I've never had an inside dog and nether has my wife. So were not very experienced in this department. Most of my research has told me that you shouldn't scold or negatively enforce the behaviors of the dog. I have a hard time doing this because I'm a pretty disciplined person and my lifestyle is just like that. I'm trying though! We don't really know how to potty train him... During the night or when we are both gone he goes into a cage with a potty pad and a blanket for him to lay on. There isn't that much room... the cage is pretty big but i have a divider in it so he only has minimal room. I read this is good because they don't like to lay or sleep in their pee or poop. We've had him for 3 days and so far he has pooped in his cage while we were sleeping everynight. It's very cold and wet outside(england weather sucks) so I put a potty pad by the backdoor and tried putting him on it and when he pee's somewhere else we tell him no then put him on the potty pad. We wipe it up and put the paper towel on the potty pad aswell. He has pee'd a few times like on the wall and on my tv stand and has only pooped in his cage. I just tried taking him outside because it stopped raining and he pee'd like 5 times on this one plant pot? I guess a cat or something was there but regardless each time he went I told him good boy and petted him quite a few times, then let him roam some more. He didn't poop and it's almost time for bed so... I guess i'll just cage him tonight again and take him out when I wake up. Please tell me the best way to go about making sure he learns successfully, I want him trained ASAP but I do like him and i'm willing to work with him and my wife obviously aswell. Please help me, thanks very much in advance.

Even tho he is 7months old it looks like he has had no official potty training. It takes time and patience. Everytime he goes on the pad treat him. Something special, piece of chicken perhaps something he does not get any other time. It does no good to reprimand him when he has an accident. You don't want to scare him and make him afraid of you. A schedule is key. Take him out immediately in the am. The earlier the better. Feed him and give him water. After drinking he should go out again within 20 mins to relieve himself. The saying is a pup can hold his bladder 1hr for each month he is, however, he has had no training yet so your starting from the beginning. It is important to take him out as late as you can in the pm. Do not put water in his crate during the night until he can get threw the night with no accidents. Be patient, it will happen. Also do not use the crate as a punishment only for comfort and sleeping should the crate be used. Gate the kitchen or bathroom during the day with pee pad down if you don't crate him. Take him out often and treat him when he goes. He will make the connection. Make sure the treat is something he looks forward too. Peanut butter on your finger is also a good treat. They soon learn that when they go potty outside this special reward is given and he will be on his way. Congratulations on your new puppy. It's hard for a guy to realize they now have a baby on their hands but in time he will be your best bud.

| Great post and advice Archie. I think this is just part of owning a Yorkie just when you think they get it you probably will have an accident; so don't give up. Just keep at it and it is probably best to pad train because of the weather there. Ours use the pad mostly and only pees outside when she comes out of her crate after an extended period of time. If we are hanging out at the house, she will go find her pad when she needs to go. Don't get me wrong I still find boo boos, but I just have to let it go and that is hard for someone OCD. Which will probably be hard for you too being military disciplined. I too have never had a Yorkie or small dog before and ours is 11 months now and we are thinking of getting another. Now we have the fever.

Hello Wicked. Max was trained very quickly. We followed the advice of our vet when we brought him home at eight weeks old. Take him out he's after he's eaten, she said not to wait even five minutes, on waking, as early in the morning as possible, and as late as night as possible. We tell him "be quick", and he knows what we want him to do, then he's given a lot of praise, and a treat. We live in Scotland, probably a bit colder and wetter than England. Max has never used potty pads, and goes out whatever the weather. Get your baby some warm jumpers, and a rain jacket to keep him dry. Max is getting a new baby brother on Sunday, so we'll be starting training our new addition too. My husband takes Max out when he has jumpers and coats on. He disregards what his buddies think. (He used to be a bit of a tough guy lol) I hope this is of some help, good luck.

potty training we got our first yorkie brooklyn sky at 6 weeks old and she was trained by 6 months using a potty pad. we put it in front of the door and would put her on it every 30 mins. just say go potty and give her a treat it took a while but it worked. then we got our second yorkie bella star and she kept pooping in her cage at nite to. easy solution we take her out right before we go to bed and then we put her in bed with us, she hasnt had a accident yet. first thing in the morning put the puppy on the pad. bella is 5 months old now and already trained. good luck! yorkies are wonderful. terry

My Advice. Be consistent and find out what works for you and stick too it. My walker is adapting pretty well to MP life, (My husbands whole unit loves him) There is hope, I just keep reminding myself that that little dogs have little bladders and they can't hold it as long. Good luck and all the best.

You know what worked for me...NAGGING!! haha My dogs seem to love to go on newspaper rather than a potty pad. I kept it in the same spot and everytime I had to clean up accidents--I NAGGED and sent the doggies outside (they get a treat when they come in). I didnt give them treats for going in the correct spot because they always seem to go when your not looking. I also kept them confined to one room with tile floor so it made for easy cleanup. It took about two months, but I dont have to clean up accidents anymore. Nagging is easy and everyone knows how to do it
