| Today we start Private Training...wish us luck! I've had several posts on here about Sebastian's fear issues. Barking and growling at strangers and other dogs when out and about. Today we start Private Training with the Petsmart Trainer that I found and love. I really hope she can help us out and that we can start to help Sebastian not be so afraid. Wish us luck please! This has been a long road. We have both learned a lot along the way, but we still have a long way to go.

| trainer Wow, I just finished our private trainer and how the time has gone. Jack who is afraid of every thing has come out of his shell. He will sit, stand, stay, come and Bella well she is another thing but she is 8-mts old I will continue to work with her. let me know how it goes. I love my trainer he comes to the house and we go over the work-out and then he is helpful about any questions we have. Its sad that its over now. How long is the sessions? Cheryl/Jack/Bella |

| Thank you! I it went very well. That is...he still barked and carried on at all the dogs and people in Petsmart. But, we were able to break his barking cycles and get him to be quiet. I learned that I need to up my treats...find the things that he finds the tastiest and offer those only when we are going to be in an area with a lot of distractions (like training sessions at Petsmart, out on walks around the neighborhood). The trainer is so nice and patient. I'm so happy I found her to work with us. The sessions are an hour long, and we go 4 times. We are going every other week, which I think is good. I need the extra week in between to work with him at home. It is hard work and she said that it will take a long time to get him over this. She described him as very "reactive". Which I think describes him well. One annoying thing, is the people in Petsmart. It still amazes me that a dog can be crouched down and barking aggressively and people will still insist on staring at him, and reaching toward him trying to pet him. I mean geez, can't you see he's scared to death and you need to just BACK OFF! The trainer was very good about telling people in no uncertain terms that they cannot come near him because he is in training and is very nervous. It was really annoying though. I also have really enjoyed having someone tell me how to put all the steps together to train him to do the basic obedience commands. He learned "sit" a long time ago, but I could never get him to sit until I gave him a release command. Now after our first session he is able to sit until I give him the release command. It was a really great experience and I'm really looking forward to our next session in 2 weeks. This is such a nice change over our first experience with a different trainer 8 months ago!

| Hi, which Petsmart in Maryland are you using? I also live in Maryland and attended the group sessions at the Petsmart in Bowie. It did not work out for my little one. Petsmart really freaks her out. There was too much activity going on that we could not get her to calm down. I was considering the private lessons also. Your posts gives me encouragement that it may work for us also. Thanks for the info. |

| I'm using the Petsmart in Frederick. I think it all depends on the trainer and how patient they are and willing to work with you. We tried a group session first and he only lasted for 10 minutes. And, the trainer couldn't give us the attention we needed because she had other people in the group that she had to work with as well. So, we switched over to Private Sessions. It is still hard because there is sooo much activity in a Petsmart store. But, that's really what he needs. He barked a TON throughout our session today (I had a huge headache by the end), but each time he got into a barking tirade we were able to get him to stop by using the quiet command and giving a treat...or by making a high pitched noise, or a squeaky toy. It was a LOT of work, but I learned a lot and I think it will be worth it. The nice thing is that the Petsmart training is refundable if after the first session you can tell it isn't going to work out for you and your dog. So, I definitely think it's worth a shot!

| Oh sounds like you have a winner for a trainer. I chuckled over the trainer telling them to back off the dog.. so me, I do ir all the time when I working fear dogs.... great of her. I wish you the best of luck and I hope all goes well. There will be set backs that is the nature of training but take a breath and keep on going as in the set backs and the recovery you see just how far you have come. Have fun and hope that fear will one day be a long ago memory. Keep us posted. JL
