| Barking Dog getting carried away This is another problem our dog Tico has. He like to bark his face off. He barks if we leave none stop, and he barks at sounds. He barks when people come over. I don't mind him barking sometimes, but not to the extent so it sound like some maniac screaming. Should we get him a bark collar? |

| Personally I would not put a bark collar on Tico unless everything else has failed! That means lot's and lot's of training. Yorkies are fast to learn but you must be consistant. Try coins in a can. Beer can, soda can etc. When your pup barks shake the can and say no barking. This must be done each and every time he barks. Use a stern voice. Don't shake a finger at him because that's threatening. If your cozy on the couch and he barks you have to get up and shake the can. Leave it on the table where he can see it. It will take time but hopefully he will react negatively to the noise. Some do some don't. Thank heavens Buddy hates that can. All I have to say now is I'm getting the can and complete silence. I also leave it by the front door when I leave to assure there will be no barking when I'm gone. He hasn't figured out yet the can only makes noise when I shake it! LOL He dug up the door trying to get to me when I leave and barks too. I now leave it by the door and he won't go near it. Dog phychology! Good luck. Puppies will be puppies but as they mature what you teach them as puppies will just reimforce itself in them. Good luck, be patient and consistant. An easy fix never fixes anything in the long run. |

Working with a dog takes time and respect for its needs. Dogs bark to them it not a problem to us you bet it is. I work on give him a job.... make sure he gets a ton of time to run and play .. make him tired. Job so a dog can not bark well or at all laying down.. teach him down. Once down and quiet treat the quiet not the down. Put the quiet on a word cue once he lays down and remains quiet for a few seconds. Yelling no bark at him a wagging a finger just makes them think that their Mother has joined in the barking and they got it right so shh from you and a calm down and reward that and the quiet. Other thing to so is he got to take a breath i in that breath mark it with a yes or a click and toss a treat. keep doing it in the breath between barks... then stretch the breath out by not clicking or saying yes for a few seconds and see if he can hold himself from barking. What you want in the end is for him to learn that when he feels the need to bark if he lays down and shhs you will offer him love. You want him to learn self control not fear induced behavior. You want to teach him what you want rather then what you do not want so he has a clue and can adjust to that. As for the bark collar .. I have not problem in the use of a sound one as long as it is used only as a bandage to help in training not the end of it. I see that all to often and then the dog learns to bark over it and inflict hurt to its ears and mine by having it go off. Also on the wrong dog things like pop cans with coins and sound bark collars and water sprayed at them will cause a dog to flinch and be fearful. Alway watch for fear and stop any form of training at the sight of it. Make the adjustments needed in the training that caused the fear response and try again. JL

| He is doing his job as a watch dog. I personally like the barking even when she does it in the middle of the night. I somehow feel protected. But my situation is different; living in a six bedroom house with just a four year old, I kind of need a loud barker. I think it must be a good reason why he is barking. Just let him bark

| If it is a manic bark it not going to fix it self nor is being manic a state a dog should be left in... Stress kills. I suggest also work on nothing in life is free and see if you can get a little understanding going with him that you have rules and he should follow them. So anything you want to give him like a cuddle or food or to play first a sit or down is needed then the good event. I like to also once you have taught him quiet to suggest that when he barks.. say thank you calm and gentle and this gives him an understanding that yes I hear you hear something and I will check it out but shh now. Mine nows quiet and that it is to be quiet but it will bark if someone comes up the stairs and does not say hello or t will grrr at night when we are sleeping to tell us there is something about. But barking for the sake of barking is not a good healthily thing. Sometimes dogs just like to hear their voice it does not mean they should use it all the time. JL
