| Peeing and Pooping in Crate? I recently got a new puppy and he is 14 weeks old. I understand he is young but ever since I got him he poops and pees but mainly poops in his kennel all the time. In the middle of the night he doesn't whine or bark to tell me that he has to go all I hear after he has gone is a bunch of movement in his kennel and then I know he's gone. I check him every couple hours but he doesn't go and then just will poop sometime in between. I tried a smaller crate and putting towels in there to make it even smaller but somehow he is able to crawl on top of towels. We just got our older yorkie completely trained for outside so I don't want to start him on pee pads but when he wakes up or when I take him out he just wants to run back in the house because it is cold out. I don't know what to do. Does anyone have any suggestions? |

| I'm not going to be much help, seeing as I came on here this morning to ask a similar question! I know that you have probably read it a thousand times, but it really is all in consistency. We got Ralphie on a schedule and we try to stick to it. We got him at 8 weeks and started training immediately. We were timing how long it took for him to poop and figured it to be around 3 hours after eating. That worked for a while, but now that he's older he's been holding it a lot longer (almost 8 hours and most of the time sleeps through the night.) Our problem is when we have to leave to be somewhere. We typically aren't gone for very long, but there have been three incidents where he has gone in his kennel. We also block off his kennel, but I use half of a shoe box and then a rolled up towel on top, so he can't climb up there (we had that climbing problem too, and this seems to have worked). He's still young so I know that we will have these set backs, but it just bugs me that he will go in his kennel even with half of it blocked off, but he can hold it for 8 hours other times! Are there any tricks to get him to stop doing this in his kennel? Have you tried the potty on command trick yet? That works for peeing with Ralphie. When you put them outside, don't say anything until they pee and then say "potty" while they are doing it and praise them...we used treats in addition to this. So, now he knows when I say potty to pee...he's gotten quite good at it. Oh wow, sorry so long, and to have hijacked your post! Good luck! |

| Hello, My puppy is now 20 weeks. I got him at 12 weeks. for about 3 weeks he was completely comfortable with going potty in his kennel. We have a pretty good sized kennel and he would pee or poo and then go lay in the back. My husband got a bed for him that fits in the back and since then it has really curbed that behavior. Now he will whine if he has to go potty. |

| Im glad theres someone else out there! Hi All.. Im new to this site.. so this is my first post.. hello :-) I have the same problem with my new puppy. She is 12 weeks old tomorrow and she was doing really well with training when I got her. The lady whom I got her from said she was trained on newspaper but Ive taken her outside immediately. She has just within the past week decided that she would pee in her crate at night. I take her out every night before bed & she gets no water after 7.. but every morning when I wake up she has already gone. I think I may have to try getting up in the middle of the night with her and see if that works. I called the vet to see if she could possobly have a urinary infection (some say that during training this is common) but they said that I would somehow have to get a urine sample????? Any idea how to accomplish that?? I thought that making her crate smaller would help but that doesnt seem to be working either.. |

| crate training I am a new yorkie owner and jack is 9 weeks old. He is doing really well crate training, although he pees in his kennel during the day..but he holds it all night! I'm not sure what to do either!! I have not had any problems with him pooping. We have hung a bell on the back door and we take his paw and ring it everytime we take him out. He has actually started catching on to this, and he has only had 1 accident in the house!! If any of you figure out a way to get the puppies to quit peeing in the crate, let me know!!! Good luck to you all with the training!

Yorkie Yakker | Hello all! I have an 11 month old boy, Emilio. I trained him to a litter pan but no litter just a wee wee pad in it. That way he has a designated space for potty. He did really well at first, was trained totally in about 2 weeks. But has had regression a couple times. I put the pan in the crate with him when we are gone. That way he has a place to go and doesn't have to hold it. As for the person asking about the urine sample, I did the same thing when Emilio was regressing a bit, took him to the vet. I tried to take the wee wee pad out of his pan so he would go and I could pour it into something to take, but he didn't go, I think it confused him, so the vet got a urine sample with a catheder. They only need a tiny bit to do the urinalysis. Maybe try to put a wee wee pad in the kennel only at night and see if that helps at all. |

| How big is the crate you are using ? if your puppy has enough room to urninate/deficate in there, and go lay somewhere else to get away from it, than it will continue. I would try to make the crate smaller so that your puppy can stand up and turn around and lay down- you may want to put a divider or a box to take up some of that extra space. if i was in a crate, had ENOUGH room to do my thing, and go sit in a seperate place i would- so just make it smaller! GOOD LUCK!
