| Training in Cars & going out! I have a problem when I take Alfie out and when he is in the car. Firstly, when he knows he is going out, he goes mad, like an excited little child. He runs around and barks and squeaks and tries to bit his lead. I don't know if this is normal or he is just so excited going for a walk. Secondly, when he gets into the car he is constantly crying and whining in the car. He quietens down a bit when we open the car window for him to stick his head out but when he takes his head back in he starts the crying again. I don't know if he is crying because he thought he was going walking but instead he is going in the car. I would love to sort the problem out because I prefer to take him everywhere I go but sometimes I have to leave him because he is so bad this way and it could make me have an accident. I do have a car harness for him which I use for longer journeys but it makes no difference. I have considered buying him a travel crate but I don't know if this will be any difference either. I have tried to walk him before journeys but that hasn't done any good and most of the time I can't walk him before the journey. Any ideas?

| You will need another person to help you with training. Have them get in the back seat with him and make the ride fun instead of stressful by giving very tiny bits of his favorite nibble. It will distract him and he will soon associate car travel with a fun thing.

| re: anxious pooch I would definately consider buying a dog booster...There are so many on the market.....he's obviously stressed and anxious in the car. My daizy gets anxious and nervous too.. So if he's strapped in on a high booster where he can see out...maybe you can put a couple of toys near him. Hopefully it will help him to calm down during car rides!!! Good luck and don't give up.

| He needs to learn self control. So suggest nothing in life is free protocol. you can google that. I suggest teaching sit and wait at the door. You can put the dog on a long line and ask sit and open the door and if he moves close the door.. open just a little and only for a short time. If he stays sitting then you can give him a reward or a payment on good work of a treat. This next one is over a three day weekend when you can devote the time. Yes it does take this long if not longer to work a skill like this. I work self control in the car as well. It going to take a few days but will help build a nice strong relationship with your dog. Start with simple going out to the car and treat for a nice sit. walk back into the house. Back out and sit and stay or wait open car door and close treat go inside. You can stop at any point for the day through this preferably on a good positive note and before both of you are tired. Two things you are teaching is self control and also that not every time you go to the car does it start and you go. Bust this up into as big or as little of pieces as you want this is just an example of what could work as a training plan. Ok back at it so out to car sit pen door , get in get out close door and the dog need to stay calm.. you build this till you can start the car down the road and back up or go around the block.. This is what is needed to a true phobic dog with panic attacks in cars. JL SO no we go.. back out to the car
