| Training a 6-month old yorkie Hi, my yorkie just turned 6 months a week ago. He's been with me for 4 months already, yet I haven't taught him any tricks. I wanna send him to a dog school, but that would require me to leave my baby there for a month. I can't just do that. I have apprehensions regarding his safety since a month is quite too long. How did you guys teach your yorkies some tricks on your own? I really need your help. Thanks a lot. |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Are there any classes you can take him to on a weekly basis? Here, I go to a class for one hour every week. They give us homework to work on during the week. And I never have to leave him with anybody. Barring that, I'd get a book on dog training that starts with basic commands like sit, stay and come. Those are three of the most important things you can teach him. At the same time, get him used to walking on a loose leash. You don't want him pulling you. A good way to do that is to stop and change direction when he tries pulling one way. Also, socialization is incredibly important at that age and even younger. Try to get him around lots of people, other dogs, adults, children. You can control the interaction any way you like, but just meeting new people in new environments will help a lot. You don't want him to be aggressive to anyone. Good luck, and welcome to YT!

| Hi! Thanks for the warm welcome. I'll have to look for a dog school that conducts a weekly training class. I hope I find one. If not, I guess I'll have to try the dog training books then. Right now, to teach him how to stay is so important as he could get so naughty. Haha. I'll expose him now to lots of people and our chihuahuas here at home. Thanks for the advice! |

| Board in training school are not the way to go for a family pet.. a working dog is a differnt story. You want to do the training to build a bond and that dog wants to be with his family sending him off to who ever to train will put him at risk of trainers and others that do not train or respect dogs in the manner you as the owner does. To train at home there are some really good books you can get on line and do it yourself. You do not need all of these at all to do a great job. The last three are a really good start to understanding dogs as a whole and what they really are not what we tend to think them as. YT Addict | I would expose him to as many dogs as possible, big or small. If you can, defiantly go to a weekly puppy class. It is a great way for your yorkie to meet other dogs in a safe enclosed environment, another option would be to check out a local off leash park. |

| I took my dog to a once a week class for 6 weeks. (she graduated from it already) She is also 6 months old and she knows about 8 commands. I also take her to puppy socials once or twice every week to help her stay socialized. Good luck with your baby |

| teatching them tricks is a lot of fun. If you send your puppy to school you are going to missout on something great. Also, the longer you wait, the harder it gets for them to learn. Just have fun with it. Dont tire the puppy. If he gets bored, stop, for a couple of hours. Do it with in short periods of time. Most of all, allow yourself time. Give them a lot of attention before the training section. Then turn away, and wait till he seeks your attention again. That is the perfect moment to train them. Maybe you can take him to a short class from time to time, just for socialization, and support
