Potty Training Tips for New Yorkie Owner I'm a first time owner of a 13 week old Yorkie puppy. Chase is using the pee pads 70% of the time, but I really want better results (eventually want him to go outside once fully vaccinated)! He doesn't have a problem with pooping on the pads, but peeing is different story. We have hardwood floors throughout the house and if there are any items of clothing or one of his blankets on the floor, he will pee on it. Sometimes he pees near the pee pads and other times no where near it. We praise him like crazy whenever he uses the pee pads. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Well actually, mine took the "pooping on pad" with no encouragement at all. It is the pee that's the problem with me too. I got Mocha at 4months, so only recently she's been having no accidents for whole days and such. She's had a relapse in the last few days, but I'm not complaining. At least she seems to get the idea already - when she has accidents now, it's more of an attention seeking thing. But it's down to one accidents per day, and I can live with that . At least for the next few months! | |

Is pee pads only the best way? We just got our little Bandito yesterday and have been taking him outside. Our problem will be when we go back to work, we are not sure if we should use pee pads or get a litter box...wow so many different options but we are truly confused. What has worked best for any of you? Thanks

Bandito Mom, What works for me is fencing Mocha in with the pad, her bed, her toys, and some water. Pack it in so there's no space to pee ANYWHERE BUT THE PAD. Take them out to play twice or more per day up to an hour, but only after they potty, so there's no accidents in your house. I will include some pictures to let me see her "room". I prefer pad with a holder. I don't know about litter box, but I was thinking that if your baby is like my Mocha, she'd probably eat the litter... But every pooch is different. I'm only telling you what works for me.

First he is really young and it is truly going to take awhile before he fully gets it. From what I have read and experienced it could take up to a year to be fully potty trained. If you do a search here on YT for potty training, you will find a ton of GREAT info. Where do you keep his pad? I have mine in a litter tray, so he has to step into it to go potty.

Potty Training Tips for New Yorkie Owner We also set up a "condo" for Gucci. He has a space for eating, sleeping, playing and potty. We put him in his condo when we're out of the house. He took to the pad right away. Last month we took him on a week long trip. By being with him and constantly taking him outside, he picked up the idea of outside potty breaks. I think I'll pick up the pad starting tomorrow. He doesn't use it anymore, except to play with it! Gucci will be 5 months on the 1st and tonight he sat in front of me and whimpered When I got off the couch he led me to the door! We took our walk and then he wanted to go to bed. We're very fortunate because I believe he's 99% trained. I think the trick is persistence. We walk at least 10 - 15 minutes every 4 hours or so.

I think time and consistency are key. Chase has definitely improved within the last week or two. He rarely has pee accidents now. When he does it's because he is placing just his two front paws on the pee pad. The little stinker! I'm trying to correct this... Thanks for all of your tips! They definitely helped.

thought we had it...then not so much Yes, Bandito is very young 8 weeks old, the breeder wanted him with mom until he was at least 12 weeks and then mom got out and took off into the road and was hit by a car, she will be ok but she is having to stay a the vet until the surgery for her hip is done Monday. So the breeder called and said they were doing good on dry food and asked if we wanted to go ahead and pick him up since mom will not be able to care for them. We agreed and now we have a very young puppy. I can say that we decided on a litter box with a sifter and to put the pad on the bottom before the sifter to see if this will work. We were going to use our Xtra large crate that our Golden had to make a den on one side and potty tray on the other. Then I googled myself into even more confusion when so much advice is given about doing that within the crate (even though it is really large and lots of space). So, we just keep taking him out every hour during the day and three hours during the night, we have only had one accident but I am sure that has more to do with our going outside with him so much in our back yard and not because I have an exceptionally easy to potty train puppy ( I do wish ). I have survived two children (boys) an adult child (hubby) and my wonderful QH Bob yet for this little bandito ............. I feel so unprepared and completely lost????

! I was surprised when our breeder released Gucci to us after his 6 week checkup and first shots. We were really lucky with him because he slept through the first night. After that we had a couple nights where I got up with him once. A few nights later, he started waking up at around 5. Pottied on the pad and back to sleep. He was only 1.3# then. After about a week he went straight to the potty pad. Once he had all his shots I started him outside. He's really doing well. He's started letting me know when he has to go out so while we still find little surprises every once in a while, I'm pleased with his progress. Again whatever you decide, make sue you're consistent with the training. These little guys want to please, so let him know what you want!

Potty Training Yorkie Hey I have a wonderful little 12 week old lady. She was working on papertraining and doing really well. Then I got the bright idea to gradually change to pads and I think I blew the whole housebreaking training. So we are beginning again. She will urinate on the pads but will not poop. I was reading some of the responses on this forum and was quite surprised how many people are taking their puppies outside. My breeder and my vet told me not to put Tadum on the ground at all until all of her vaccines were completed, which will be months. She has had her first two sets. Still not allowed on the ground at all due to parvo.

Just an update for Tadum. She is now 16 weeks old. Still has not completed all of her shots. Next vet trip is May 6th. I have read alot about yorkies, grabbing every bit of information that I can obtain. This is what has worked for me. I bought a potty pad holder from Walmart and potty pads. I also bought the spray that you spray on them which gives the pad a scent. Worked great for her urine, but pooping was something different. Then I read that sometimes they do not like urinating and pooping on the same pad, so I went to Walmart and bought another pad holder and set up two pads. She gets up and decides which one she will use for the day. It has been great. We only have an occasional accident maybe once a week, usually when I am changing her pads and I think she has to make a statement because it only takes a minute and if she needs to go, she will. I have given up outside training at this time because I do not believe my vet will ever clear her. I have never had to keep a puppy in the house for this lenght of time before. But we traveled with her last weekend and staying in the motel room...the pads were a delight. No late night walks, etc... My next thing to master is her hair. I am going to figure it out. My groomer will not take her of course until all of her shots are up to date. Her hair is thin, dull and knots. I brush her daily, use products that have been recommended, but nothing stops the matting. Oh the water bottle has definately helped with her biting my feet. My hands are still like her best chewing frenzy but we are working on it.

HI, we are new to this too.. we have had our puppy 1 week, he is 12 weeks.. Just a wee guy.. I had read on this site about the book "How to Housetrain your Puppy in 7 days".. We read it prior to picking our puppy up.. And he has not had an accident yet!! We keep him on a schedule for eating, and if he is not with us, (which he usually is) we crate him. In just a week, he has figured out what going outside to his "spot" is for, and usually always goes potty within a few minutes.. The first day or two we would have to walk him around the spot for 30 minutes to an hour, until he went.. but, he gets better every day!! I'm sure there will be accidents, but the book is a Floor saver for sure..
