| back to the basics---papertraining help Hi, I've posted before about my new little Emma (10 weeks) going anywhere she wants. She seems oblivious now about what newspaper is. I had planned on only using a tray and papers, rather than going outside (for a variety of reasons). Is there a way I can start over with a clean slate? I've only had her for 5 days. Other than the potty situation, she is wonderful. sammer |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | She's really young, most don't know what a newspaper is at that age. I used pee pads with Joey, but made some washable pads that worked better with him. I noticed he just loved going on the little blankets that were in his playpen. I think you need to keep her in a small place like a playpen or you could also crate train. This site has some excellent advise on housebreaking your dog, remember it's written with all breeds in mind, and you might have to adjust some of the "times" for yorkies, since their bladders are smaller, and may need to go more often. Free House Training for Puppies and Adult Dogs - No More Accidents Starting Today! I would keep Joey in a small crate at night next to my bed, during the night I would place him on a pee pad in the bathroom, at this age you might have to do this 2 or 3 times. As she get older maybe once. If the crate is small enough, she won't go in her bed, but will cry, and wake you up, don't ignore the cries and make her hold it go to the pad. In the morning I would always take him outside first thing, because I wanted to duel train him.

Yorkie Yakker | You can always start over, the big key is consistency. I trained Emilio to a litter pan with just a wee wee pad in it. That way he has a defined space for potty. That has worked great!! Try using some Housebreaking Aid spray to help her, it makes them want to go where it is sprayed. I used it in the beginning and just sprayed it on the pad and it worked. Be patient with her she is just a baby. But try the litter pan (no liter though, Emilio wanted to eat it). Plus that way I cut the pads in half and get two from one. Hope this helps! |

Yorkie Yakker | Sorry that was the other thing that I wanted to mention, when he was little, well he is still little, 10 months yesterday and all of 3lbs 8 oz. We kept the pan in the living room with us when we were home and would put him in it every 1/2 hour or so in the beginning and tell him potty when he went. If he went somewhere else (poo) we would put it in the pan and tell him potty. It took a couple weeks, but he got it. The pan is nice also because you can take it places with you (peoples homes or long car trips). Make a huge deal when she goes in it, lots of praise and clapping and I used a special treat that he only got for potty. |
