Trying to train my 2.5 year old yorkie to "go outside" Our yorkie, Toast is giving me fits!!! Some background: We purchased her from a breeder at 7 months (bad breeder/bad age/she was shaking with fear the whole time/we walked in and bought the dog anyway, we couldn't leave her there) and she had never been outside or trained in any way...over the years, we have pretty much pee pee pad trained her, but she poops where she pleases (SOMEtimes on the pad...). This has been a difficult thing to do, since she seems very modest, and wont let us catch her "in the act"...ff to her current age (2.5 years) and we want to try to get her to pee outside, instead of in...the first step, we gather, is to catch her in the act, so we take turns sitting outside with her first thing in the morning and try to catch her and praise her....i think we have sucessfully done this about 15 times in 2 months...after about 2 hours tho...we are letting her in and giving up for that morning...i need ideas on what to do! Is she just too old for this and we are asking the impossible? Is there some method i should know about with un-puppies? Frankly, we love this dog to pieces (she is my "puppy child") and i KNOW how smart she is...any ideas? Thanks in advance....

It's not too late to train Toast. However, if she is set in her ways, it might take awhile. First, do you believe in crating? Or confining her to a small area? You are going to have to get tough with her. If you can't watch her and make sure she isn't pooping in the house, she need to be confined. If she is loose and poops in the house, then you are not watching her close enough(I know it sound mean but you have to take charge.) Big praises when she go outside and doing it right. Put on a strick potty and food schedule. The trick is to put more structure in the dog's life and add decipline for dog and owner. Consistancy and repetition is the key. Good luck!

It is not impossible to train a dog of this age. It will take discipline, dedication and consistency. I've trained many older yorkies who have spent their entire lives in puppymills. Unfortunately she already thinks it is ok to go in the house and that will be the hardest habit to break. Do not leave food down for her, feed her in the morning and evening and immediately take her outside. If she makes a mess in the house even if you don't catch her in the act, show her the mess and tell her in a strong voice "bad girl" or whatever terminology you wish to use. Pick up the mess and the dog and take them both out to where you want her to do it. Put them both down, tell her that is where she is supposed to do it, use whatever language you wish but just make sure you use the same phrase each time. I don't know your circumstances with respect to whether or not she is alone for part or all of the day. If you are there with her all day then take her out every half hour or hour, don't wait longer than an hour, and every time she does something give her a treat and praise her lavishly. You can gradually move the location of the pee pad closer to the door so that eventually you will move it outside as well. If you are taking her out often enough however she won't use the pee pad as often. Most of all be patient and be consistent. Try not to vary her meal times as her bowels will train to meal times. Most dogs will need to go within 20 minutes of having eaten. I have one little guy that races to get out the minute he has swallowed his last bite. My girl on the other hand usually takes 15 to 20 minutes after eating. Good luck.
