| I got doggie litter box OK, I'm at the last straw. I canNOT get my puppy to quit going to the bathroom in the house....both #1 & #2! We have a mature female (4 years old)...so you'd think he'd at least get the hint. She never goes on the floor. Finally today I found where he'd hiked his leg on my dining room table chair (!!!) and I nearly lost it!! He was neutered about six weeks ago. He's almost eight months old. SO, in desperation, I went to Petco today and bought a doggie litter box with the pellet litter. He #2'd on the dining room floor shortly thereafter, so I carefully picked it up (noooo, silly, with tissue) and put it IN the litter box. He acts insulted!! Three times I've caught him eating the pellets, but I didn't think it wise to scold him much if I want him to use the litter. Has anyone else used this litter box thingy? What else can I do to encourage him to use it? I've been very diligent about taking them outside, but he just saves it up and goes INside. |

| I tried the litter box and mine chewed on the pellets too. I gave up. I would try bellybands in the house and a small xpen outside in a designated potty area where you place him once every couple of hours until he does his business. You say "hurry up" and start taking steps away until he goes and then you let him out and praise him. Once he realizes that he is in there and you leave unless he goes, he will go quickly to get out. The xpen needs to small enough that he can't play in it. Good luck. |

| I use the litter box but with wee wee pads inside. I use a reward with a treat system for peeing and pooping in the box. It has done wonders, they still have acidents but, not all over the house like before. The pee accidents are b/c TJ sometimes doesn't go all the way into the box (or b/c he too is lifting his leg every now and then on the corner of the box, he is 6.5 months old and is being neutered this Friday 8/12). Roxy has pee accidents b/c she is doing it for submissive relative issues (I am trying to work with her to build her confidence so we can get her out of this submissive mode, any adive on that would be greatly appreciated?) The poop thing is another story. They do poop in the box up stairs their room, but downstairs they have their spots (NO WHERE near the box), so I am still working on that! Good Luck! I have one of the Dog Litter box (in their room) and downstairs I have 2 shallow rubber maid wrapping paper tubs. |

| I'd say the first thing to do is clean your carpets and soak them with no scent spray. Dogs potty where they've pottied before. they smell the scent in the carpet and on the furniture and they want to go there again. Until you get rid of that smell you are going to have problems.

| I am like Nicole (TLC)... I use the litter box with a puppy pad in it -- mmmmuch cheaper than the litter and easier to deal with. Nutro makes a training treat that has a very strong smell/taste to it. I ONLY use it for a potty treat - and I only give him 1/4 of the treat ! Otis loves it and sometimes all I have to do is show him the bag and he runs to his liter tray/puppy pad ! I also have had problems with his occasionally not going all the way into the box to pee - but he has learned that if I see him and say "ALL THE WAY" that he goes right in ! I would suggest finding a treat that your pup can't resist and only use that for potty time. Good luck ! |

| I baught the litter box, and pellets also. Tried for about 3 days. PELLETS everywhere!!! she even eats them!!! I did from, soaking pellets in her pee, to getting poo and putting in litter box also..NOTHING!! so now i have been working on taking her outside. No CRATE yet. But keeping her in a schedule of eating times. This is what i have done this past 3 days. Wake up around 7:30 to get ready for work, Before doing anything, walk her outside. She pees. i praise her with a treat. I know she might be hungy. So u put her in my room with food while i shower. If she is done or not i take it away. Get dressed. She plays a bit with my jeans, socks, and sometimes sandals. Then i take her outside again to see if she poops. (She did 2 times out of 3.) When she didnt poop, i braught her inside and made sure she was with me to keep an eye on her. As soon as i noticed fast movements or sniifin took her outside again kept on eatin my breakfast as she walked outside. She pooped. YES!!! so that took care or breakfast. I left her in my room with toys and radio. With window open (she gets on bed and looks out the window.) When i get home at 5 pm. I take her straight outside. sometimes she pees sometimes she doesnt. But when i take her back inside. i give her food and water again and take her outside again. Keep an eye on her to see if she does or not, then take inside. After she did it outside and gave her treat. I just let her run around the house. She only peed 2 times insde in this process. Which is great to the 3 to 5 pee spots i use to find when i got home before. So i will keep on doing this. But instead of leaving her in room alone. I will eave her in crate in living room so that she sees my other dog and hears noises and not feel alone. I hope it works out. |

| It was a while back when chachi was a couple of months old. I tried pee pad training after that and was unsuccessful so I trained them to go outside.

| I posted this response to an earlier question I received on Litterbox training, but thought I'd add it here as well. We just purchased a second yorkie baby and are in the process of litter box training her now, so the training part is fresh in my mind once again It has really been easy. We buy litter boxes especially designed for dogs (at petsmart). The larger, deeper ones are great if you have a male, as they like to hike their legs and the dog boxes are deep enough to allow them to do it. We don't use the dog litter either, as they would always try to eat it. Instead we just use regular "clumping" cat litter. The trick to training them is to keep the box clean. Our schedule is as follows:First thing in the morning, put them in the box and don't let them out until they potty, which never takes too long since they've been holding it all night. We praise them as they are doing their business and then let them out to eat. After they eat, they usually have to go do #2. When we see them sniffing around and doing the 'circle dance' we put them in the box again. After they do both #1 and #2, we scoop the waste out of the litter box and head out for work. During the day, we use baby gates to keep them confined to the kitchen and they have free range of it until we are home. As soon as we come home we clean out the litterbox again. Keeping it clean, will keep them using it. I was home with Elvis during his litterbox training, so I was able to keep a close eye on him. Whenever he awoke from a nap or ate a bunch, I'd just put him in the litterbox. It's the cutest thing when you see them head off on their own to the litterbox for the first time At first, they'll forget alot, as they do with any type of house training (they're just little ones after all), but they start to pick it up after a bit. It usually takes about 5 months for them to be trained completely, but then no more worries about keeping them caged up or letting them outside in the winter time or getting up early to let them outside. We keep a litterbox in the laundry room and the master bedroom bath. They sleep in our bed and have NEVER had an accident in it. When they need to go, they just hop off the bed and go to the litter box, then climb back up into bed with us. It's so nice not to have to worry about them holding it all day. Good luck with your babies !!!! |
