| Barking!!! My little boy (4 months old) has just discovered that he has a voice. And now he likes to use it. Not really for anything in particular (he won't bark at dogs when we're walking, or when he hears something outside the apartment)...he just runs around like crazy sometimes and barks. I know that he's a dog, and that's what they do...but is there any way to get it somewhat under control? He knows the word "no", but he definitely doesn't listen to it when he's barking! He gets plenty of attention from me, so it can't be that. I just don't know! He's such a cute, snuggly little guy...I just want him to be a little quieter! |

| I'm lucky that Bailey never barked needlessly - but I saw a post on here a few months ago (about barking) that I thought was a good idea: When he barks - go to the scene like you're concerned, observe and then reassure him that its all okay. Then he'll associate "okay" with reassurance. I've also heard about shaking a pop can with pennys or spray bottles to discipline. Others might have some other ideas, too. But I think its best to nip it in the bud before it gets uncontrollable. Good luck!!

| It honestly sounds like he's just playing and you shouldn't worry about it. Winston has different barks. He has his playful bark when he's running around all crazy and than he has his mean bark. When he's playing we let him be but if he barks AT something or someone... we spray him with a spray bottle and redirect his attention to something fun again.

| I think it's so cute when they find their voices. If it gets to be just too much for you, just pick him up and walk either outside and let him down, or just walk around holding him for a minute or so, then put him down and roll a ball for him to chase.

| Thanks! Yes, it's definitely a "playful" bark...no mean barks yet! He's really cute when he does it, and I don't really mind too much...it's just my neighbors (I live in an apartment) I worry about. |

| Enjoy your puppy and I'm sure all you'll have to do if anyone gets upset, is just show them his cute little face and they'll fall completely in love with him!!

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | I have had the same problem with Lola. Her barking is almost out of control, to the point where I can't take it. When she gets mad she goes crazy barking, like when I leave her or something. Also, when other dogs are outside my apt. she starts barking and it will be just as I'm about to fall asleep or something and I'll be startled right up with a rude awakening! It's almost like nothing will stop her once she barks. The only thing I've found to work a little bit is something I learned on the "Dog Whisperer". If you flip them over on their backs, so that you're the alpha, and they're in complete submission, you can tell them "Quiet" or whatever you like. Hold them there so they become totally submissive. Say it in a calm voice, but stern. I also added my own little technique where I cover her eyes and ears. It seems to help actually. It really calms them down. However, it seems to be only a temporary solution to the bigger issue. So, I will be checking back to see if anyone else has some more advice! Good luck!! I hope we can figure this out!! |
