| Is this a behavior issue? Am I nuts? I'm currently in Roanoke, VA, visiting my sister, who just moved here a couple months ago. Before I came, I asked her if her dogs are well socialized. She said yes, but I don't agree! From the time we walked in the door, her Lab has continually attacked my Yorkie. It's like he's trying to dominate him completely. He knocks or holds Gus down with his enormous paws, then licks and bites him like he's playing with a stuffed animal. At first I thought maybe the Lab was just seeing my tiny boy as a toy, but a day later I saw that he's doing this with their other dog, too, another large dog! When Dog 2 is sitting quietly, the Lab grabs his ear with his teeth and pulls him across the floor! The best part is, my sister doesn't see anything wrong with this. I've heard Dog 2 yelp, so it's obviously hurting him. I think this Lab could do with some obedience training before this becomes a lifelong behavior (he's 8 months old). Am I crazy for thinking that this dog needs to be broken of this habit? |

| He needs to learn there are limits! I don't think you are wrong in thinking that the dog needs some training. If your sister doesn't establish her place as pack leader, it sounds as if will take her spot!

| was your yorkie in pain? pawing is a sign of playing, so is nibbling. my 100lb puppy will often paw my 4.5 yorkie to get him to play, and even roll the yorkie over if he wants to. the important thing is no one gets hurt. if the yorkie yelps, the big pup stops. if i think its out of hand, i say "ENOUGH" and its over. if your sister tells the dog to stop, and said dog doesnt, then there is a problem, and the dog should be trained. just because you think its not playing, doesnt mean it is. when i play basketball, a non-basketball playing person may think we are fighting (my dog certainly does at times). but, if the dog is told to stop and doesnt, there is a training problem, or if your dog yelps and the other dog doesnt stop, theres an aggression problem, but it sounds like playing to me. |

| additionally my yorkie will also taunt my large dog into doing that same behavior. licking can be a sign of dominance or submission but certainly not agression. if hes grwoling (a mean growl, not a play growl) it can be agressive, or if the dogs hackles go up, etc. there are plenty of signs of agression. i am not in your situation, so dont know everything, but from what you said, they are just playing. perhaps your yorkie isnt used to playing with bigger dogs (or you arent used to him playing with bigger dogs) and that is why you see it as a problem. my money is they are just playing though, if your yorkie isnt having fun, you can always put a stop to it. my sister also has a yorkie, and at first, would not let her yorkie (an 11lber) play with my large dog, but has realized he is friendly and they play just fine, most of the time (her dog can be vicious) |
