| loosing my mind! I am to the point where I have had enough. Dusty is 2 1/2 years old and I can not get him trained. He goes out to potty but he still comes back in and marks EVERYTHING. I have talked to countless vets and they all tell me that because he was already doing it when I got him and because of his age that having him fixed will not fix it. I have tried everything. I use bellyband and at first it worked but after about a week he didnt care, he marked anyway. To top it all off he has went back to pooping in the house. I am about to lose it, what can I do? I can not take this anymore. I am a germ freak and this is not going to work anymore.

| Perhaps get him motivated with treats. Start him off, from square one, give him very little access to your home, I would keep him on a leash while inside, the leash attached to me, if he lifts, let out a loud AAhaah, or NOooo, take him immediately outside, tell him, pipi outside! when he goes, tell him goooodboyyy, scratch his chin, & give him a favorite small treat. Keep this up for a week or two and hopefully he will be back on track. Love & patience will help you get through it.

| I would first be looking for another vet. Nuetering is NOT the answer, but NOT Nuetering is assuring that he won't stop marking. Sunnie did not get nuetered until he was 3 yrs old. He was marking everywhere. After nuetering, it took a while, but he has dramatically slowed down marking. VERY RARELY do I ever see him lift his leg in the house. Until he is 100% house trained, he should NOT have full access to the house. He should be kept in a small area and not allowed access until he is 100% trained. You will need to do the work to take him outside often to potty, then immediately take him back to his area if you cannot give him your undivided attention to prevent accidents. PRAISE him each and everytime he goes outside. BUT the FIRST thing I would do is get him nuetered. Once he has started marking, there is NO chance he will stop without being nuetered.

| Timmy marked everything in my home, at least he thought he did.. he had a belly band at all times when he had free run. After I got him neutered it automatically stopped but I knew that there was a chance that he wouldn't stop marking but he did...I got lucky! Now he has free run and doesn't need a belly band. He even squats when he goes potty (he's pad trained) but when he plays outside he'll hike his little legs up on a tree. Everyone makes fun of him when they see him squat...because he's a boy. Makes me mad but I rather have him squat then hike that little leg up in the house. I think what you need to do is start all over with him. Keep him in a confined area when you're not able to watch him. Belly bands are not going to stop him from marking. Takes a little time & patience, once achieved everyone will be happy. I do however know how frustrated you are. Just keep calm, because they notice your frustration. Good luck. Last edited by Timmy; 07-29-2008 at 10:22 AM. |

|
I do the treat thing, I did the leash attached to my hip for about a month, he never once tried to mark while at my side. I never see him doing anything but I find little yellow spots everywhere. I really dont want him cut because I want to get a female and breed him. I know that it would be best for him health wise. Maybe I am being selfish. Now that he pees in the bellyband that is gross, I dont want him to jump in my lap with a wet band on. I try to keep one on at least while my husband is home but I have to change them none stop. I hate to keep him locked up because he is up so much of the time because I am gone.
Well there is your answer. If you are gone, you are NOT there to train him to go outside. I won't go into the breeding issue.. but if you are not going to nueter him, and you are not there to monitor him, you are going to have to live with the marking.

| I think this is next on my list. I would rather have a trained healthy dog , than breed him.

| Remember that you need to be consistent and patient with him. Putting him on a schedule helps too.

How often are you taking him outside to go potty when you are home? If he is always wet in his belly band, then he needs to go out more often. He obviously cannot hold it as long as the time span is betweeen going outside. Start taking him out every two hours. If he is not going in his band, lengthen the time. between taking him out. Soon you will know how often he needs to go outside. For the marking, the only thing that will help is nuetering him. When he is marking, it really has nothing to do with him having to go potty. He is MARKING his territory. I think you will have to keep him isolated to a small area ANYTIME you cannot give him 100% of your attention so you can see the signs that he needs to go out. I wish you luck with him.
