| How do you teach toy names? Layla and I were doing some training tonight.. just basic sit.. stay.. wait.. look.. ... come... just to get her thinking.. and then I WAS thinking.. i know some people have taught their dogs Toy names (ie.. duck... frog... elephant) and while Layla knows "ball" and "Kong" how do i teach other names. Thanks! oh also... anyone who took petsmart or just know.. how do you teach "touch" i completely forget. |

| I love this thread! It's so funny because we name all of Isabel's toys and we sit in amazement at her when we call the toy by name and she will go through the house searching and always bring the one we asked her for. We just thought it was some quirky talent she had. But Isabel has a little innate obsession with her toys and esp. chasing balls. So we spend ALOT of time with her doing playing this game she loves the most! [BTW: If anyone ever wants to discuss their dogs love of toys-and by that I mean "obsessive" love of toys...for example at Xmas, she has no problem sniffing out the toys meant for her stocking!] But I digress. Here's what works for us when introducing a new toy... when we first get her a new toy we name it for whatever it looks like....this is part of the fun for my husband and I...I know, we must have no life..haha. So we give her the toy...and say the name of the toy as she is grabbing for it. (and believe me, she gets soo excited when she gets a new toy) We use repetition and never change the name of the toy. For some reason, the names have always stayed in her little brain. Just for fun, here are some of the names of her toys... 1. Multi-ball (this is her absolute favorite-it's a sort of multi-colored rubber "puzzle" ball) When we say, "go get the "multi"...I swear she will search the house until she finds it. 2. Cotton candy ball (this is just a soft-rubber squeaky ball that has blended pastel colors and looks like a handful of cotton candy!) 3. Jessepe (this is a rubber squeaky Italian man in a striped outfit complete with little flat hat) 4. Chicken leg-the classic rubber chicken leg toy 5. Moon ball - a yellow nubby ball--she seems to enjoy the toys with texture the most 6. Chewy - this is just a little raw hide bone that will every once in a while give as a short treat--this may bring up a whole other issue, but we have found that for Isabel a little chewy helps with her obsession with the ball--we use it as a diversion sometimes.

| LOVE the toy names, especially Giuseppe! hahah! that's too good. Sadly, Layla isn't "quick" enough to get it on the first try and isn't OVERLY crazy about her toys.. they are ok.. and sometimes she will play with them.. but she is more about her "ball"... i just thought doing this kind of thing would be good training and get her thinking... |

| It's definately good training and keep working with her! Most likely she will catch on...yorkies are SMART cookies!! Read more about their intelligence ranking and their ability to learn with repetition at this Wikipedia link -scroll down to "intelligence" ( Yorkshire Terrier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) Just a fun fact to encourage you to keep trying!

| I need to work with Lilly haha She knows "new toy" and that's it... so you can imagine how this works. I'll say "Lilly, get Mommy your new toy" and she usually will actually go get the newest one she's gotten... up until recently... I don't know if you ever saw the post on the furballz (I think that's what they're called) but they're these different ball-shaped toys that have a noisy ball in them that vibrate and sing songs. Well anyway, it's her FAVORITE and I mean FAVORITEEEE. I've bought her 3 or 4 new toys since I bought the furballz like 3 weeks ago and now every time I say "get your new toy" she gets it lol! I need to teach her the word favorite or something so maybe we can somehow distinguish the "new toy" from her "favorite toy". I always get off on stories lmao... sorry I would just try to keep the names of the toys REALLY short and every time you get one of them make sure you say the name of the toy to her.

| Emilyann, I know what you mean about getting into your stories...that's what I did when saw this thread. But it was neat to see that someone else has the same thoughts about things. I enjoyed reading your post here PS...and Marci..that is neat that we have the same name as it's not so common..just spelled different. I think there's another Marcy on here too...I have yet to talk to her on here though.

| I've done this with all of my little doggies. Start from the time they come home and when you pick up the toy, you will ask her if she wants to play with "duckie". It's that simple. They learn so quickly. I do that with all of the toys.
