Embarassed how do i *start* him on the pee pads?

I already know how to potty train I guess because pebbles is almost 100% pee pad trained.. but when I got her she had already learned to go on the pad so I just added the go potty command and the potty party and kept it up. My problem with bam bam is that he doesnt know what to do when I take him to the pad. When I take him to the paper (i try to take him often) he stares at me and starts shaking after a while like im punishing him or something. After waiting like 30 minutes to an hour (YES i have waited that long) he will go run some place a minute or two later and do a quick little pee. grr!! Being that he doesnt seem to like pebbles pee area and starts shaking there, I just now put a pee pad in his favorite area in the living room thinking maybe thats a better place for him and he wont think the pad is "bad." He walked right over it two times and peed on A. his bed B. the floor far away from the pad. My breeder said he was going on the paper 100% percent by himself (not on command) when he was with her so I gather he does know what the paper is for. However, i believe she just had a large area of pee pads where he played and that is where he happened to go.

Also, he doesnt give much warning before he goes. no circling, no sniffing... He is very short and close to the ground and he barely does a little squat. He might as well be peeing while he is walking!! I scoop him up after he does his little piddles and take him to the pad and say go potty here to correct him, but he is just not getting it. Please note that I do not want to crate train him. Crate training breaks my heart with all their whining. I am home all day and can do the watching and taking to the pad often method I believe.

I have wee wee wraps that I am using at night with him because he sleeps in the bed with me.

can anyone tell me how I can get him to go on the pad?! I just need him to go on the pad like 3 times in front of me, thats all im asking lol He jsut needs to see that after he pees he gets the potty party and a treat adn that its "good." I think I can take it from there... but how do I start?

Did you try to soak up some of his urine with the pee pad? Maybe he needs his scent on it to get it to click?

Other than that, I'm not much help.

Well I did just think of that about an hour ago, and soaked up the pad with his pee.. but nothing.. lol before that i was using a potty training spray that seemed to help pebbles when she first started... maybe now i should just try to use his own urine

Yes - Try urine. Just blot from the last accident and keep it in a place where you are or where he keeps going to. Trixie always has 2 spots she likes to go.

I do both: I use a pee pad to soak up Wall-E's pee when he goes on the carpet and I also spray WEE WEE potty training spray onto the same pee pad. This combo seems to work really well for him. He's getting the hang of peeing on the pad. I don't know if its his pee scent or the potty training spray or both, but it works so I'm gonna keep doing both!

I had a very hard time getting Mocha to go on the pee pads, too. The only thing that worked for me was going against the traditional crate training method. When I only gave him enough room in the crate to stand up and turned around, he would always go to the bathroom and lay in it. I was tired of cleaning it up all the time and tired with the fact that it was ineffective. I decided to remove the crate divider and give him the entire room in the crate. I put a blanket on one end of the crate and a pee pad on the other. He then had the choice to either go on the pad or on his blanket. Thankfully he chose the pad lol. I really think that was what got him to associate the pad with going potty. He finally started getting used to peeing on the pad (inside and outside of the crate).

I know some people might object to my method and argue that they won't learn to hold their pee/poo that way. But, that was the only thing that got him to start using the pee pads consistantly. He doesn't go outside either, so he doesn't really have to "hold it" as he just goes on the pads. In the beginning (before I changed his crate set up) I tried the spray to attract him to the pad, but for some reason it made him dig at the pad like crazy. I swear, this was the only that worked for him. I tried everything else and nothing seemed to work. Please give it a try and let us know how he makes out. Good luck

I am still having trouble. Ive tried his own urine and and the spray together, and both seperately. nothing seems to be working. yesterday I gave up and put some wee wee wraps on him to see where he would go and he peed all over himself. He would go to his bed, pebbles bed, random places and try to pee. I really think he is trying to mark or something, because he doesnt just go once. he goes like 5 times in a row. I am sooo frustrated. I have a kennel (the smallest one they sell) but man i know he is just going to pee in there too because he is so small, and he'll probably just sleep on it and cry. argh!! :: pulls hair out::: i am considering taking him outside to pee instead (it might work if he is "marking") but it would be so inconvienent for me and someone will not always, for his entire life, be here to take him outside to pee 12 times a day lol Him going on the pad is really the way that will work best but he just isnt getting it. Even Pebbles is trying to teach him, running over when i'm telling bam bam to go potty, and peeing on the pad infront of him. Her doing this in front of him does not seem to get the message across to him: pee on the pad

I have one like this. I got the smallest one I could find (I think it's an 18"), but it's still pretty big for Mocha who is about 3.5lbs. I got mine at Petsmart, but if you can't find a small enough one, they have some on Ebay like this one Dog/Pup Folding I-Crate Cage Kennel 18" 2 Doors/Divider - eBay (item 300242634015 end time Jul-23-08 18:16:03 PDT). That was just what showed up on the first page when I searched....you might be able to search around and find a better price.

Maybe try using something other than the pee pads, like washable pee pads or newspaper. All Yorkies are different. My breeder had paper trained Cheyenne, and she refused to use pee pads, so I went back to newspaper (on pee pads) and she does use the newspaper.

Rusty used pee pads at 12 weeks, Cheyenne uses newspaper at 18 weeks. They both have free run of the house, always have.

Also try buying some baby changing pads at the yard sale or thrift shop and see if he will use those. The older they get too makes a big difference, as puppies can't hold it as long.

Isabel's breeder used a baby playpen. Half was set up for sleeping half was set up for paper training. When we first brought her home we also used a playpen (she was so small even at 13 weeks) and this seemed to scale down for her the idea of "where" to do her business. A big house can be overwhelming to such a small puppy.

yeah bam bam is very little.. he is barely a pound. I thought this might make sense so I set up the playpen for him half sleep with water and food and half pee pads. i really hope this works. bam bam is used to free reign around the house and with playing with pebbles and also being held, so he is not happy with this.. and pebbles doesnt like it either. they can't play with eachother and he cant lay on my lap. pebbles keeps pawing the playpen and bam bam is whining
