Animal Smiley 036 Lonely Puppies

Hi-

I just got a yorkie pup- 11 weeks- and will have to start leaving him at home alone when I am at work! I am not going to crate him- we have a nice tile area in our master bathroom that is a good size for him to stay while we're gone. My dilemma is how do you keep his mind occupied and from going crazy from loneliness for 8 hours each day? Any suggestions??? I love my new pup and I don't want him to be depressed and lonely ALL DAY LONG!

Please help!

Thanks.

Turn a radio for noise and company for him. You can also leave him different toys out to play with during the day. I usually make sure they have a toy that challenges them. Maybe a treat toy that they have to work on getting the treats out. He might be alittle young and not understand that till you work with him on it. If you go home at lunch is a purfect time to get him out and he will look forward to that break and take him out for awhile to play with.

another good thing along with tv/music and treat toys is to hide some of the treats or food in different places in the room that are easily accessible to the puppy. this makes meal/treat time a game that can also help entertain for a period of time while you are away. i also know that they sell a plugin that releases a scent that is supposedly similar to a hormone that the mother gives off, and it does not give off any odor. this will help with separation anxiety in case your puppy has any of that.

We keep Bailey in an ex-pen which is placed in front of several low-rise picture windows - so she can watch the birds, squirrles and rabbits. Sometimes, when we get home, she's all rested - and sometimes, she's completely exhausted!

When I first got Lil' Miss Izzie, at 12 weeks old, I did use the plug in defuser that releases the homorne that is suppose to calm them and I also left a radio on for her in the kitchen (which was where her xpen is). It did seem to work for her as I had my neighbor checking during the day to see if she was crying and to call me at work if she was crying/barking. I also left her with plenty of safe toys to play with during the day and just recently bought the doggie day care from kong that dispenses a treat every 4-8 hrs....

if you have to leave him alone all day, he will be lonely.. you should get another puppy and have an xpen for them..

Wow. Great advice on hiding the treats. I never would have thought of that! Do you know where they sell those hormone sprays? He's such a young puppy- 11 weeks- I think that he is still used to being around his yorkie mom and gets a it sad at times. We just got him 5 days ago and I hate to leave him alone when he's used to having his mom, dad, and brother to play with during the day!

See- I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to get another puppy so he can have a buddy to play with (the more the merrier, right?) and not be so lonely but there are two very good reason why I can't:

1) my husband says "One's enough! we just got him" and I can't argue with that!
2) I don't think I could afford another one! I wanted to get a yorkie from a reputable breeder and NOT a puppy mill or pet store, so I had to pay alot for my little guy... so for now I think I'll tough it out, give my pup all the love I can give him when I'm home, and pray for the best when I'm not there and also try to fill his pen up with toys!

The radio and hormone diffuser are goods ideas too... i'll try to find find one of those diffusers if I can.

Sneak him to work with you! Or maybe you can come home on lunch, so he is not there all day by himself.

I have the same problem as you. Luckily for my little guy Mufasa AND me, my kids are out of school for the summer so they have been able to spend a lot of time with him. I also have been on vacation so it's been great spending all our time with him. When the kids go back to school Mufasa will be home by himself for about 7 hours a day until the kids get out of school and I'll just keep plenty of toys out for him. I know I maybe making a HUGE mistake and will probably pay for it later but I just can't crate Mufasa. I'm going to use a belly band on him when I go back to work. We usually take Mufasa everywhere we go but if we can't then I always make sure all the doors are closed throughout the house so he can only roam the kitchen and living room and I've puppy proofed everything so I feel comfortable that he won't get into any trouble.

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to get another yorkie but just can't afford it right now since we too paid quite a bit for Mufasa and just can't spend that kind of money a month after we got him. lol

First question - What is a belly band?

Also l am trying not to be rude here, but isn 't it a bit selfish to get a pup and then leave it alone for 8 hours a day? I think that all those who are thinking of getting either a pup or adult dog should think what is in the best interest of the animal before themselves. Also why put your self through all this guilt?

If l was working those hours, there is no way that l would leave a pup on its own. The poor baby is going to be traumatised within a few minutes of you leaving. Have you not got a a friend or neighbor that you trust who could have the pup during the day? Or what about a puppy day care?

Again l am not trying to be rude but just leaving toys and a tv on is ni comparison to having you with him.
