| The Loved Dog by Tamar Gellar Hello Everyone! I have just about finished reading The Loved Dog in preparation for my puppy in 2 days! I even made notecards for each section to keep handy while training him! So, I just read the Housebreaking chapter, and up until now, I have agreed with everything she is saying. She says to crate train, the dog should be in the crate for 2 hours with no food or water. Then, let out to eat, drink. and eliminate for about 30 mins, then repeat the cycle all day. What will I be able to do for 2 hours in a 1 floor condo without feeling guilty about my new arrival being in a cage? I REALLY want to do this right from the start but does everyone agree with this method? Thanks, Dina |

| I have the book also. When Sadie came home with us, it was winter. We wanted to train indoors untill it was warm out. We got a used (Small) baby play pen. I put puppy pads in it and I put a paper towel with some on my other dogs pee and poo on it in there so she would smell it. She went as soon as she got home and continued to do so every time we put her in there. It was the potty. Now it is warm and we have her going out side in an xpen type thing. (Plastic baby play yard. My dogs know potty time and hardly ever have accidents. Our town has a free shop so I got the play pen for free from there but any second hand store has them for pretty cheap.

| My potty training book (House Training for Dummies) had the same method. I didn't like keeping Bailey caged up all the time, either. It was bad enough that we had to keep her in an ex-pen while at work. So, we blocked off our living room - making sure there were no things she could go behind and hide - laid down blankets and kept our eye on her the whole time. If I had to do something - where we couldn't give her our undivided attention (i.e. cook dinner, dishes, brush teeth - anything), then she went in the crate. Hubby was there to help - and that was priceless. Otherwise, I agreed with everything else in the book. We had Bailey trained in two months - using a service bell at the door. I bet you're so excited - good luck - and congratulations!!!!

| Yes I am SOOOOO EXCITED! I think I have too many plans in my head without even having the baby yet. The biggest problem is that I just wanted to keep his crate in my bedroom for sleeping in until he can sleep with me. Therefore, I didn't want to move the crate in and out of the bedroom and confuse him. But I could use it in the same way, just when I can't be watching him. Or, I also gating off the kitchen because its the only tiled floor in my condo. He'll have his litterbox, food, water, toys, and bed in there. So many possibilities! |
