| My Mickey drags his Butt Across the Grass and in the House...why? Hello, I have four month old male yorkie by the name of Mickey "Mac". I noticed the other day that he was dragging his butt across the floor. Why is he doing this? |

| Butt "scooting" can be a sign that their anal glands are full and need to be expressed... or intestinal worms. I'd have a fecal sample tested.

Senior Yorkie Talker | It could also be that he has a tiny piece of poop stuck back there. Or if you just groomed that area he could be a little irritated. When in doubt you could always take a stool sample to the vet and see if its worms, or just bring him in to see if his anal glands need to be expressed. Sorry, I didn't notice that you said you had him tested, my vet says sometimes its best to follow up on another testing in a week or so after the first, just to be on the safe side, because sometimes the first test wont show worms/worm eggs

| You may be right with the grooming. He was groomed a couple of days ago. I will keep an eye out if he continues, but if he does, how do you "express" the anal glands? |

| There are ways to do it at home and I bet you can find out how if you just search for it but honestly - I'd be incredibly grossed out and would just rather have my vet/groomer do it.

| Take a stool sample in to have checked for worms first. Sometimes they will do this after the hair has been clipped from the anus, which causes itching. Please don't have the anal gland expressed unless it's really needed. If you do, then they will need expressing regularly. |

| Expressing the anal glands is supposedly a very smelly, messy job. I'd have a groomer or vet do it mainly because a yorkie's anal opening is so tiny, most human fingers are too big and will hurt them. Usually, the substance that is built up the glands is eliminated when the dog poops. Sometimes, the glands get clogged and have be expressed manually. When the glands are full, it becomes uncomfortable to the doggie andthe only thing they know to do is scoot their butt across the floor to make it feel better. Previous post could be right too. There may be something stuck in the anal area causing it to itch or cause discomfort. It could be a number of things. I'd say if it doesnt stop after a day, call the vet and see what they'd like you to do.

| I agree with Yorkiedaze, I asked my vet about this same thing a few years ago & he told me to be careful, once you start expressing glands, you will have more reason to have to do it. I would have your vet check the puppy, 4 months seems really young to have gland problems already. Last edited by lucyaboo; 06-15-2008 at 10:32 PM. |
