| Marking OK, I realize this has probably been discussed before, but my search hasn't pointed me to anything definitive on here, so here goes: I have two male, neutered dogs -- a Yorkie and a Boston Terrier -- both of which are housebroken. Lately, the marking in the house has become unbearable. Most of the suggestions I see on here have to do with housebreaking, which is not the problem -- they know where to go to the bathroom, they just choose to use our furniture in the house instead. They have a doggie door, but I'm at the point where I'm thinking we might have to crate them while we're gone, and at night, which we'd prefer not to do. Does anyone have any suggestions? I can't believe that this is something that we're just supposed to live with. TIA |

| That would have been my suggestion. I only have one male and never experienced marking. It must be a terrible thing and very frustrating. I see both are neutered which would have been another suggestion. I do know you have to get rid of the smell totally where they mark or they will be drawn to it all the time. Seems like they are both trying to be Alpha which is what's causes this in the first place. I hope someone else can offer you better suggestions. Good luck with it. |

I'm at my wit's end. I caught my Boston, in the act, peeing on the curtains in my bathroom while I was taking a shower. Wow did he look guilty when I called his name. That's the thing that's soooooo frustrating -- when I call them out on it, they immediately know they've done something wrong, which suggests to me that they know they shouldn't do it in the first place. I don't even have to catch them in the act -- I can just stand next to whatever item they've peed upon and ask, "OK, who peed on the ottoman?," and sure enough, one of them will sulk away or hide. | |

| I had the same problem with my previous yorkie and with a lot of work, I was able to break him of it. I live in an apartment, so I don't use a doggy door, so if you want to try what worked for me, you may want to cover the door only during this training time. If we were indoors, Gizmo wore a belly band. I still took him outside like I normally would to go pee without his belly band. I dunno about your little guys, but Gizmo was IMPOSSIBLE to catch in the act. I know some people disagree with what I'm about to say... but they DO remember what they did even if you don't catch them in the act. I would check the belly band at least once an hour to see if it was wet or dry. If it was dry, I told him good boy and put it back on. If it was wet, I showed it to him, he'd get that "I'm sorry" look on his face, and I'd tell him "NO". Then I'd replace the panty-liner and repeat the process. It took about a month for this to work, but it did work. As time went on, I would less frequently find pee in his belly band. Once he went 3 days without me finding pee in his belly band, I let him go belly band free. Then I would check his "ahem" instead to see if it was wet. It never was. I dunno if I was lucky with my method or not, but it worked for me. |

| I was told by a vet that marking has to do with a dominance issue and not needing to pee. They might be trying to establish or re-establish just who is boss.

| In my experience they are more likely to mark if there is more than one male in the house. Belly bands is what saved me! I highly recommend them.

| I'm taking a class at Petsmart with my pup and the trainer suggested flipping the dog if you catch them in the act. My pup only pees in my mom's house and in the front of the office, otherwise he doesn't pee inside. So I told this trainer...."Do you have any idea how fast he is...?" I can see him doing it in my mom's house but I can never get to him in time to flip him in the act. Now of course, let me stress, this was to be a gentle flip (nothing that would hurt the pup) but just allow him to pee on himself (which he supposedly wouldn't like) and then he would learn to stop...so is the theory at Petsmart Training. I'm thinking, great! then I get pee on me and then I have to clean both of us up. But you may want to try it. I opted for the wee wee wraps or belly bands myself.
