| potty training issues! arrrrrrrggggggghhhhhh...im at a loss here! we are having such a hard time potty training winston and its beginning to drive us crazy! he sleeps in his crate at night and is in his crate during the day while we are working...he has NO accidents what so ever in there...but when we are home and take him outside to potty all he will do is sniff and snoop around the whole time we are outside! we spend atleast 30 minutes out there, then figure he just 'doesnt have to go' so we go back inside...but once we are inside he goes!!!! it is just so frustrating because i dont know what we are doing wrong! ...and then there are the times he will go potty(pee) outside...then come in the house and poop! does anyone have any advise for us?? |

| Mine are trained on PEE PADS! They are in a specific area in my home, and my 3 just go on them when needed... They are wonderful, and when they are full, just toss them out!!! |

Just think about how many people are throwing away pee pads, it's really sad. If your going to use pads, use washable pads. "LittleBit" makes them here.

| I really hope your yorkie isn't in a small crate during day. He could have a bladder infection if he's expected to hold it for longer than 8 hours. I hope he is in a large crate with access to food, water and a PEE PAD/NEWSPAPER. Yorkie have small bladders. Give him a place to pee/poop during the day. |

| Pee pads for the OP is not the answer. She's trying to train her dog to go outside and not have a habit of going inside. A belly band/wee wee wrap is not the answer as well. The whole reason is to train the dog to know the difference of going outside for potty stuff and inside to play. I do agree that the belly band/ wee wee wrap is a temporary fix and almost like a safety precaution. When do you take him out? I crate trained my yorkie. He's never really had an accident [unless he's sick] in his crate. Truffles goes outside right when I open the crate. I take him outside about 3 - 4 times a day. I used to take him out much more often when he was younger. When I'm at home and let him off, I usually take him out every 2-3 hours. I know it's difficult. Bring treats that he likes outside with you. When he does go potty outside....whether it's pee or poo, reward him and show a lot of praise. Also patience is key. It took truffles about 6-9 months to figure out potty training and he still had accidents every so often [this is where the belly band/wee wee wrap comes in]. Hope this helps! |

I also have WASHABLE potty pads down, my girls use them, and they also go outside. I do not think crate training is the answer to potty training, the answer is being consistant with your yorkie. Leaving them in a crate to hold it all day will cause bladder infections. A ex-pen is what I would suggest, it needs to be big enough to have a pad in it.

thank YOU so much for your advise! we take him outside right away in the morning after being in his crate...then my hubby will take him out when he comes home for lunch...which is approx 3-3.5 hours later...but it seems as tho it doesnt really matter when we take him out because when he goes outside he chooses to play instead of going potty! i was just hoping someone would give me tips as to how to have him potty first...and then play! so that way we wouldnt have the accidents in the house. we also reward him with lots of praise and treats when he does go potty outside your post really did make me feel alot better...seeing that it took your furbaby 6-9 months...so there is still hope for winston! i guess we just need to keep being consistent(and patient) during this! thanks again for your reply!
