| Pottie Training outside and inside (on a pee pad) Is it ok to dual train? We have a 12 week old yorkie and he has had very few accidents. We have trained him to go on a pee pad that we leave out all the time and never move and we also take him outside (weather permitting) to pee (always in the exact same spot). He seems to get it just fine for peeing but will only poop inside on his pad. Has anyone else dual trained? If so, how did it work out? |

| I didn't start out "duel" training, but that is exactly how I have ended up. When I first got Lexie , she was 10wks old and so tiny. I didn't want my baby to go outside in the cold (we live in Northeast Ohio) I got the brilliant idea to "litter" train her, which turned out to be a HUGE fiasco!! She ended up thinking it was ok to potty in the house. After that, I did make multiple die hard attempts to get her to go outside only. BUT as it ended up, she won't go out when its raining, snowing, windy, ect (yes- I know she's a brat To make a long story short, I have pee pads in my house for her (which FINALLY she uses consistantly) and will also go outside. She prefers to poop outside, but as far as peeing, she is not picky- when she has to go, she has to go. It HAS actually worked out well, because when we had over a foot of snow earlier this yr- she didn't have to go outside. I have heard it confuses them to learn both, but for us it has worked, BUT you have to be prepared for accidents occasionally and really work with them. GOOD LUCK!!

YT 1000 Club Member | KiKi does both......I take her out first thing in the am...and tell her potty....no problem...and when we are in...she uses the pad..she has not yet gone to the door when needs to go..she just goes to the pad..... When I pad trained her...I put her on the pad a lot and said "go Potty" and each time she went..I praised her "good potty" and gave her a treat.... Good Luck!

| can you quickly describe how you trained your dogs to do so? I am planning to get a yorkie in the next two months or so and I really want to get everything planned out. I want my dog to go on the pad when I'm out at school/work but then I would also take it for walks in the morning, afternoon and at night. I just want the pad to be there so there won't be accidents during the day when i'm out. can someone please explain the method to teach them? |

First you have to have one designated area to put the pee pads....at first use 4-5 spread out in the space....put the pup on the pads many, many times during the day and said "go Potty" and each time the pup pees or poops give lots of praise and say "good potty" and gave a treat immediately....do this each and everytime.....soon as pup starts to catch on....start removing the pads until you are down to only one.... If pup makes a mistake and you see pup do it....pick pup up...say wrong and put pup on the pad and say "potty here", then let it go...( If pup makes a mistake and you find it later.....just ignore the mistake...clean it up and hope for less accidents I use the ones from Pet Smart (come in a box of 100) and I have never had a problem with tearing or leaking.... Good luck

So now he knows that when we're outside he can go and when he's inside he has his pee pad. We've only had him 2 weeks and he barely any accidents. He's been accident free for 3 full days now and we are very proud of him!! | |

| what if she won't stay still? My " busy body" won't stay still long enough on the pad. I keep putting her back on, but she keeps hopping off. How long should we go through the back and forth routine? Until she goes? |

| Take a day Take a day and plan to do nothing else but study you pup and it's cues. Sit on the floor by the potty pad and soft play (no wild stuff). You will notice when you puppy loses interest. Place on the potty pad and wait. If they walk off put them gently back. Sooner or later they will go on the pad but you have to have patience. Once you know your puppy's cues you will not have to be so close to the potty pad. I take Daisy outside as much as possible. I do crate her at night. When I take her out we go directly outside. During the day if I am going to be gone 2 hours or less I crate her. If I will be gone more I leave her in her pen (my utility room). As soon as I get home I take her out. Any time she leaves confinement we go out plus every 45 minutes to 1 hour. My hardest challenge had been for my boys to follow this routine. Training them is harder than her! Good luck! |

| Mine are both outdoor and pee pad trained. I started out using the pads because Jake was very tiny when we brought him home, and the weather was starting to get colder. We get LOTS of snow where I live, so I thought it would be better to pad train him. The most important thing to potty training, in my opinion, is to keep your dog on the same feeding schedule everyday. Most people free feed until the puppy gets a little older, so you have to be aware of when they eat/drink. Mine typically go after they eat. So, first thing in the morning I would take them to their pads, after they ate and before bed, and after a heavy playing session because the exercise and activity stimulates them to go. Also, after they awake from a nap. It's important to keep the pads in the same place so your dog will know where you want them to go. I started with using 3-4 pads until they got the hang of it, then I got a doggy litter box and put a pad in that. Also, anytime you see them start to sniff around, take them to the pee pad. Use whatever command your dog understands....I would just say "go potty". When they go on the pad, use LOTS of praise, tell them "good boy/girl, good potty"....or something like that. Give them a treat right away. If you catch them during an accident, tell them no and take them to the pad and say "go potty". I never yell at mine, I just talk firmly so they understand. I think yelling just makes them nervous and scared, so I don't raise my voice to them. After the weather got better, I started taking Jake outside to play and when I would see him go potty, I would again use lots of praise and give him a treat. I did the same with Jackson when I got him a year later. I have been VERY fortunate with potty training my guys, but I am home all day and my husband is home with them in the eves while I am at work and that makes it so much easier. Crate training helps with potty training. Another way to teach them is to get them used to a leash first. It's better to use a harness or harness vest with a D-ring. Put the leash on in the house so that you can have them with you at all times and you can watch them and get an idea of when they go. That's why a feeding schedule helps....they will usually go at the same times. Sorry this is so long, just trying to explain it as best as possible. Good luck!

| I'm happy to see that it seems like a lot of people have success with training their Yorkies to go inside and outside. I'm going to be getting a Yorkie (or other small dog... still deciding!) soon, and I'm starting to like the option of having the dog use the pads sometimes... my dogs have always been big, so I had no choice but to take them outside all the time. I think the indoor option sounds like it might be a good idea, especially since I'll be traveling a lot. Do any of you have experience with having your dogs use pads in hotel rooms or friends' houses? Does the training carry over or do they have accidents in new environments? |

| Traveling Yes, I have traveled a good bit with my 6 yr old Yorkie and a few times with my 5 month old Yorkie. Any time you enter a new environment I would expect an accident or two. Potty pads do work well in hotels and at other homes. I restrict their area until I know that they will use the potty pad. I also take them outside if that is an option. Belle (my older girl) is very territorial. She will potty until she can't any more just to claim an area! You said that you travel a good bit. Would it be possible for you to "trial" travel first? Drive around for a bit and then go visit an understanding, dog loving friend or family member? Place a potty pad down and go through the same method that you used to originally pad train you baby. Yorkies are VERY smart. Your pup will catch on. Good luck! |
