Senior Yorkie Talker | Ring that bell!!! Ok... so Dim Sum is now 4 months old and I think we have the potty training thing down to hte point he knows he is suppose to go outside. Right now he runs to the back door to let us know he has to go out. If we don't see him he sometimes comes back to us and paces around the place. You can usually tell by the intensity of the bell around his neck that he might want to go outside. However there are situations where he has to go and runs to the back door and we don't clue in and he ends up going at the back door because he couldn't wait anymore. I want to get him to ring a bell at the back door to signal to us as he will not bark to go outside. Has anyone had success with this? I'm looking for a bell for him. I saw the Tell Bell but shipping to canada doubles the price of the bell so it doesn't make sense. Anybody know a place in canada that has the Tell Bell or something similar so I can reduce shipping costs? Any tips for getting him to ring the bell?

| My Yorkie girl is trained to use the bell. What I did was ring the bell every time we went outside for potty along with our key phrase "potty" (right before opening the door). For about a week or two. Then, I worked with her to touch the bell every time we went out, and rewarded her with a treat, then worked on having her touch it with her paw and reward, then go out, potty then reward (lots of praise and rewards ) It took a few weeks, but now she uses the bell to go out, to tell me when my older dogs want to go out (they never learned the bell, just sit by the door), she even rings the bell to tell me when my older dogs want to come back in (she learned this on her own, man they are smart!!!) My back yard is completely fenced in with 6 foot privacy fence, so the older dogs are allowed to go out on their own. I am in the process of teaching my Biewer the same habits Just keep at it, repeating every time you go out, eventually he will do it, and you will be soo proud!! It is a great tool to have, since we can't always be in site of a door when the babies need to do their business.

Senior Yorkie Talker | Thanks for the response. Sounds exactly like what I want. It sounds like she associated the bell ringing with opening the door. Thats good. What kind of bell do you use? Did you get the tell bell or are you just using an ordinary one?

| I just found a little cowbell, about 2 inches in height and attached it to a rope and hang it on the door handle. I've never seen the tell bell, but have seen poochie bells online made for this purpose.

| Here is a link to the Poochie Bells web site. It looks like there are some retailers in Canada that sell these. http://www.poochie-pets.net/WHERETOBUY.html

We did the same thing with Maya and Scooter using the poochie bell. It took us longer than a couple of weeks though......more like a month before they were consistent about rining the bell with their nose. Make sure you reward with treats if they ring the bell. Good luck!

Senior Yorkie Talker | Thanks everyone for the tips. I'm going to try the poochie bell and see if that can work. Thanks so much for the site.

Senior Yorkie Talker | I just saw it on their site. How is that working out for you? Do they have a hard time ringing it?

| Bell for Knockz Hey Knockz, It doesn't take much effort at all to push the bell down with their paws. I taped a small cardboard circle to the top of the bell on the push down piece. I thought the push button might be too small and may hurtt heir feet. Regardless, the disc I put on works beautifully. Because it is a little bigger it also acts as a lever, so to speak, so even less effort for the dog. It took a couple of weeks to get the dogs to ring it but patience and persistent is the key. Good luck. |

| We have Poochie Bells and they have been great!! Jaxon learned them very quick and now I'm working to get Andrew ringing them. They just push the bells with their face. http://www.poochie-pets.net/ I can't imagine going without.

By the way, it was easy to train, it's part of Petsmart trick class. You give them treat for just touching the bell, and then finally for ringing the bell. He learned this immediately, and then I just asked him to ring the bell every time we went outside. Soon he was ringing it on his own.

| I went to a craft store and bought these marble-sized bells, a whole bunch of them, that look like they might go on Santa's reindeer. I was able to attach them to a thin metal chain (by bending paper clips!), and hang that from the door. My friend with a Yorkie and a poodle just has a single bell on a piece of string. I rang the bells before I opened the door (every time) and when we went outside, the first order of business was to go potty (stood there and said it until both dogs did something). No running around allowed until something happened. Lucy quickly caught on, and decided she wanted to ring the bell to go outside for some fresh air too. So if she rang the bell and didn't "do" anything, we came back in and she went in her crate for a little while. (15 minutes?) Eventually she got the hang of it and we don't have false alarms too often anymore. On a side note, the cat learned to use the bell too... LOL. Teresa |

| I have similar problem with Kramer, if we don't see him at the back door he goes on the rug, however i tried just a regular bell hung by a string on the back door and i would tap it and say potty, but he was so afraid of the noise he would run in the other direction and go nowhere near the bell. Maybe i should give it another shot with this tell bell. |
