The stragne thing is now today he went on his bed and in his crate..he did it twice today and I am thinking or wondering what happen? I know I am away for a good amount of time. Usually every morning I let him out he does his thing then from 9-3pm I let him out again for lunch time..but sometimes he goes sometimes he doesnt..I am curious has anyone had their dog be soo good at not pooing in their cage then all of sudden they do? should I be concern? or what should I do? |

reply How big is his crate because if its to big he poops but he can go to another spot to sleep and he is still comfortable because the poop is is in the other corner. it may also depend how long the dog is outside because i leave my dag outside and when he is ready to come inside he is standing on the door. another suggesttion is to walk your dog because with the exercise it works out his his muscles and he will go eventually (this is a suggettion if the crate is to big) because my dog used to do the same thing. A puppy should at least be taken out 5 times a day because he doesnt have complete control of their organs.

Well his crate is not that big...I let him out and let him play or awhile outside but this puppy always barks as soon as I go inside or leave the room he barks and whines..I am hoping he will get over that I am not going anywhere and coming back instead of him going crazy all the time when I leave him..I didn't kwo we had to walk him that much considering he soo tiny and he can pretty much do exercising anywhere..he is 5months so I guess I should start letting him out every 2-3hrs..does annyone know at what age they start to mature and get better at doing their business?

When you are letting your puppy outside, do you know for certain that he is doing his business out there? In other words, do you make sure he has completely gone to the bathroom, before you leave him to his own devices? It maybe that he is going out there to play and nothing more. So my recommendation is to be in attendence during his bathroom breaks (your puppy does not know that these "outside" opportunities are bathroom breaks; he cannot reason that this is the only chance he will get before being crated for a number of hours). Also, while yorkies need very little by way of excerise, they do need at least 15 minutes a day of good excerise, either with walking, running, or hard play. Simple day to day activity is not enough. I know that Millie Sage needs to "walk it off" to have a bowel movement. She requires a little time and quite a bit of room to do it. So unless you are watching your little one, he may not be doing it outside at all. Last edited by Ladylavender; 07-19-2005 at 08:01 AM.

I'm having the same prob. Bailey is 12 weeks old, and has started pooping and peeing in his crate. He only does it at night, which is really odd, because he used to just wake me up. What can I do to get him back to that behavior? Because I'd rather wake up a few times a night to take him out than spend my whole morning cleaning his crate out. His crate is miniscule (compared to, say, my mother's Sheltie's...it is a yorkie crate after all), and his poops and pees all around the perimeter. He used to never pee in his crate, and now it's all the time!! How can I stop it???

I'm no expert, but based on what I have read in books you need to do the following: 1. Clean out the crate really really well with a neutralizer like Nature's Miracle or Simple Solution. You want to make sure that the pee and poo smells are out of there. Change the bedding if you have too. 2. You say the crate is miniscule compared to the sheltie crate, but is it too big (right now) for you puppy. You need to stuff the crate with cardboard or something that will only give the puppy room to stand, turn and lay down (no more room than that). 2. On the new clean bedding and crate sprinkle some of his food, or treats all over. You can even spread some liver paste or peanut butter on the sides of walls. (You are trying to make this his den and a happy place) Keep the door open during periods you are with him and let him go in there eating and licking. You can even do this when you are ready for him to go in there for the night. 3. Set you alarm and wake up every 2-3-4 hours, whatever it takes so the puppy learns that going to the bathroom is only "outside" the crate, not in the crate. I would start off doing that and see what happens.

I noticed that a couple of ya'll are somewhat new to Yorkietalk and let me just say a great big welcome!!!! We're very happy to have you. I'm sure if you read back through a lot of the info on here about potty training you will learn a great deal more, but I do want to mention that Yorkies are well known as being one of the more challenging breeds to potty train, often, (as with my first two) not being really 100% until around a year or so. But other people have had them trained earlier. The extra patience and effort required are rewarded by the extra love and joy you get from the Yorkie breed. Also, remember, 5 months is still very young to be expected to hold it for very long. I don't have much advice about crates - I've never used them but plenty of members on here have and I'm sure you'll find lots of great advice. Good luck and again, welcome! Dana
