| In need of training tips!! My husband and I got a great little dog a few months ago and we are wondering if you all can help with training ideas. Diesel is 6 months old now. We just got him to start sitting when we ask him to. What we would like is to teach him to come, stay, lay down etc. Also to stop biting us. If he does bite we tell him no and give him a small spanking. So the biggest question is to help us with the training. Come, stay and lay(and others if you can help out!!!!) Thank you for your time! |

Good work on the "Sit"!! "Down/Lay" is the next easy step. In the sit, simply move the treat down and slightly forward (sort of an "L" position). By allowing Diesel to follow the treat with his nose, his body will automatically end up in the down position. The "Come" command is easy with treats too. Just call and reward. But a good suggestion is to make sure that you don't treat until you've touched his collar. This will keep him from learning the Come and Run game before you can actually pick him up!! Instead of spanking, I would redirect with a toy while saying "No Bite". In addition to just not using anything that could easily get out of hand, you don't want to use what Diesel is biting as the correction tool. That is confusing and will encourage biting. Good luck, and I'm sure you'll get lots more suggestions!!

| We are now starting to get the lay down. Diesel started today with it! I am sure it will take a while but we were excited that he got it for the first time by himself! He will not stay there(or sitting) very long. How do we get him to "stay"? Also he is not doing the "come" command at all. It is like he is not interested in that. Thank you for letting us pick your brains! Quote:

Getting them to stay takes more repetitions and patience. I'm sure everyone has some great ideas - I love hearing how everyone conquers things just a little bit differently! I first start by covering the treat with my hand and "sort of" laying it on the floor in front of Coby and stay "Stay". I also use a one-finger gesture with my other hand. This not only makes him concentrate on all of me, not just the treat, but also teaches him a hand command at the same time. Hand commands are good, because there might be times where you don't want to speak - or it's too loud for the them to hear, etc. Every time Coby moves toward the treat, I take it away. It takes a lot of repetitions. But when he waits (for JUST a split second in the beginning), he gets a treat, and I say "Okay". As you practice, you lengthen the time and start actually laying the treat on the floor without him picking it up. They learn so fast. Very soon, you will be able to stand up and walk around the room before giving your release word. The really fun part for me is when I put both boys side by side, lay a treat in front of each of them, put them in a stay, and walk around the room. They are trying to keep an eye on their treat, their brother's treat, and make sure that their brother doesn't get their treat first. Keep working!

| Hello to another MN friend. Welcome to YT!! Please don't spank Diesel, this will just set you farther back in training. Telling him no bite, and making a sound like it hurts you then ignoring him after for a while is a better approach. Positive reinforcement is key. Have you heard of clicker training? I highly recommend it. I used it on both of my Yorkies and had great great success with it, they know all the commands from come (most important, IMHO) to sit, lay, spin, rollover, shake, etc. Here is a link to info for you, this is a great training tool!!! http://www.clickertraining.com/
