| confused with potty training Hey everyone, I haven't posted in awhile--been busy with a new puppy in our family--CC. She is now 4 months old and we got her around Christmas. Here is the problem. When we got her the weather here in Colorado was brutally cold. It was around the time when Kansas and the midwest was having that ice storm and here in Colorado, we couldn't seem to get out from under the cold. So, we had to let CC go to the bathroom on puppy pads (which she wouldn't--she preferred tile floor--which in the laundry room, frankly wasn't so bad). As the weather continued this became a habit and then once the weather was warm enough and our vet said we could take her outside, she really caught on to the whole doggy door deal and urinating outside on command. Hoooowever, I cannot get her to understand that she also needs to poop outside. I've tried to catch her in the act but miss it, I've tried to take it outside and drop it in an area where Rockie (our older Yorkie goes), I've scolded her but either she doesn't understand or doesn't care---I don't know what to do!! Help!! |

| How about try it in the morning. Dog usually poop in the morning after she/he gets up. I will let her out until she/he poops outside. Until she/he poops, you better stay outside......I will also probably feed her outside if she/he does not poop. |

| Yeah I think with poop, it's kind of a prevent it before it happens type of thing. Franklin goes pees on his potty pad 99% of the time but only poops on it about 50% of the time. I think the key is to watch her like a hawk when she's out and about. We confine Franklin to the living room so that someone can watch him at all times. Any time there's a sniff-and-circle, we put him on his potty pad. I guess in your case, you'd take her outside. While you're watching her like crazy, try to get a feel for when she'll have to go. Feeding her on a schedule probably helps. Franklin is free-fed and he only poops about twice a day. Once you can sort of tell when she has to go, scoop her up and take her outside. Then, treat and praise like a crazy person.

| A little strange, but it worked for us This is something that worked for me. Gather a sampling of the poo that she has left on your carpet in a kleenex and take it outside with you and the pup. Put it down and show it to her and let her smell it. She will get the message that this is where she is to do her business. When you do take her outside to pee you can also direct her to this little pile to let her sniff it a bit. I know this sounds a bit odd, but it does work. When she is in your home, also look for the signs that she may be ready to go to the bathroom. I'm sure you already do this. We just got our second little yorkie, Cheyenne. I've had her for a week and I'm now in the midst of housebreaking. She is currently clueless for the most part at 14 weeks, but she going to the bathroom outside almost every time I take her out. Of course, I'm taking her outside constantly. And, of course, she is also going inside my house which hopefully she will stop soon! I tried this with the poo the other day and it worked for us. After she has peed, I walk her over to where one of her little piles are, and she may or may not go depending if she needs to. Hope it helps. Dawn, Cody & Cheyenne

| Thanks everyone for the advice. One of my problems of course, is that because her older brother is a "free" eater, she is to and that makes watching her like a hawk all the more important and difficult at the same time. I have taken her poop outside but she doesn't seem to get why I'm doing that--you'd think she take the hint that the other one always poops outside and never in the house. If only I could tap into my older one's language and get him to explain it to her--ha ha! Dawn, Rockie and CC girl |
