| Please help with serious potty training I had the puppy in the washroom with paper and peepee pad, he choosed to pee on his bed. Then I boxed him in the crate, he pooped and pee in there three times. I have spent since 10am taking this puppy out, he has just refused to do it. I have taken his peepaper, and poop and put it outside so he can smell it, he just wont do it. Now he is peeing and pooping in his box and it is small, so he is wollowing in it. Please help, I hear dogs will never soil their sleeping area why is he doing this where he sleeps. He has been taking out and walked and int he same place over and over and over again since 10am, and all day yesterday hour on the hour. He just wont even drip one drop of pee outside. he only knows the surface of the house, tile, wood and carpet, those are what he learned to eliminate apparently. Now he is eliminating in his box, what can I do, i am very upset as I didnt expect him to do this. He is being taking out so much and so frequently that I cant see why he will still do this here. Apparently he also pooped in his bed and that was ok I suppose. The blanket the man gave me smells horrid of poop. I have now washed it, but it came smelling of strong poop. So I guess he was never taught it was wrong. Please help me, I love this puppy and I want to help him but I am no expert in this kind of behavior. is this normal for a dog his age? If he will soil his crate now what other option do I have? He has thus far soiled all areas I have tried him in Last edited by soccbydo; 01-28-2008 at 06:47 AM. |

| You didn't say how old he is, but I suspect it's normal for a puppy to do this. Keep in mind you've had him for less than 48 hours. It's going to take some time to get him acquainted with his surroundings, and the rules in the new house. You need to try not to get so frustrated with him, be patient, and praise him when he does go in the correct place.

Yes on my other topics I did. he is 5.5 months. I am now back again after another 30 minutes out there with him and still nothing, not a drop and the thing is this, his last urine was 11:30 of which he did in the bed that is SOON after being brought in from refusing to do it, so now it is 6:55 that is WAYYYYYYYYY over due. he has pooped several times inside tho. Have him on the patio which is enclosed with some paper, he is still refusing to do it there. But if I only let him in the washroom he will do it like the niagra falls I am showing frustration here, but not to him, I am being vey soft and gentle and no showing him or even feeling angry. Only when I come here. I woudl praise him with a whole chicken if he will JUST go once outside, he has not done any elimination this far out of the house, only inside. I am heading back out again. I have not even eaten today only a cup of coffee |

| Check health board, I do not know if that has anything to do with the potty problems. |

| I thought you said he was trained, Have you called the breeder to make sure he does not have health issues, maybe the breeder can help, I would call and ask about his potty habits. he is new to your home, its going to take time.

| Did you get him from a reputable breeder? Sometimes when dogs come from puppy mills, they have no choice but to soil in their sleeping areas... nobody lets them out. While they have the instinct (I assume) not to, they probably can't hold it very long. I think the key to potty training is prevention. I know you said you've been taking him out frequently, keep doing that. Also, while he is out of his crate.. WATCH HIM LIKE A HAWK! The minute you see a sniff or circle, scoop him up and take him outside. I know it can be very frustrating but I think patience and persistence is the key. I would also put him on a feeding schedule if he isn't already. Potty first thing in the morning. Then feed breakfast. I've heard that dogs usually have to go about 15-20 minutes right after they eat although in my experience, it's closer to 45 minutes to an hour. Take him out after naps, heavy drinking, and heavy playtime. And then every hour or so like you are currently doing. I would also limit food and water a couple of hours before bed so that he doesn't have to go throughout the night. Lastly, is his bedding fabric? I've heard that when crate training a puppy, you shouldn't use any blankets or towels because they are more prone to pee on absorbent surfaces. Also, if peeing and pooping in his crate was more uncomfortable for him, he might do it less. Just be patient and keep at it. One day (even by accident), he'll go outside and when he does... go CRAZY! Praise and treat like never before and eventually he'll get the idea. Good luck.

| id say you need to feed him and right after he eats go play with him outside for as long as it takes for him to go potty, make sure you have a couple hours to spare. once he goes praise and treats like nuts. you need something to build on and right now your walking on quick sand. taking him out every 30-45 minutes is a must. i take my new girl out every hour and man are my legs strong from walking up and down our stairs. |

I guess you dont know who did the nasty right? None will tell . this is driving me nuts, he has only peed and pooped in his cage or box, and bluntly refuses to do it on the grass, gravel, or any other surface but the bedding area I will continue to take him out, hubby just took him out again and it is 11:50pm near midnite, he will wake and take himout at 2am and then at 5 when he wakes. it is not like he is being deprived of being let out So tomorrow I feel to bring a chair and sit on the road with him the whole day LOL it really is frustrating and annoying especially when you are trying you damdest to make sure he does not or she does not do it where they shoul not. | |
