| Why Does She Take So Long??? HI! Please help me! Zapphire is 12 weeks old and I just got her 1.5 weeks ago. 1.) On day one, I tried taking her outside after her meals but I felt threatened by our 2 big dogs who roam freely outdoors when they started approaching us. 2.) On day 2, I then took her to my bathroom after her meals and waited and waited and waited. I try to go in and check on her once in a while in between her cryings and it takes her 3 hours to finally poo. 3.) After one week, upon the suggestion of my vet, I put her in a playpen after every meal with her toys (w/c she doesn't play with when she's inside), water and blanket. Her bed is on one side of the playpen and newspapers on a tray on the other. I notice that she automatically knows how to do her "business" on the newspaper side and of course lavishly praise her for it (no treats yet coz i dont know what is suitable for her size). But it still takes her 3 or more hours to poo! So while I wait for her to "get busy" she cries non-stop wanting to come out. And i feel like am such a bad mother for ignoring her crying!!! Am I doing the right thing by not letting her out even when she cries her lungs out until she finally poos? And why does it take her sooooo long to poo? The breeder said that she should be ready to poo 15 minutes after every meal, is this true??? |

| THANK YOU FOR YOUR REPLY. Sigh...now why did the breeder say 15 minutes? I'm glad to know she's normal. When you say she poops "1-2 times a day" that means how many meals per day? I started out feeding her 2x a day (9am and 5pm as per instructed by breeder) and just yesterday changed the schedule to 3x a day (8am, 1pm and 8pm as per instructed by vet). Which is more correct? |

| If you know her bowel movement schedule and you know that she does it at certain times of the day, I would not keep her in the playpen that long. I would let her go pee and praise her for that and let her out of the playpen. I would continue to watch her like a hawk and keep her confined in the room that you are in, but free to play (as long as you are watching her). When it gets to be the time for her to go poo, put her back in the playpen and give her the command to go poo (you pick the command you want to use) and wait until she goes, hopefully it will be soon and praise her when she does and take her out of the playpen. Most dogs need the "poo" smell to stimulate them to go poo. So I would make sure that the newspaper has a little bit of poo smeared on it. In this way she can smell it and start her bowels moving. It she does not go after about 15 minutes, I would take her out of the playpen and continue to watch her and put her back in the pen every 10-15minutes until she actually goes.

| Exercise! They will poop quicker if you get them moving!! I take Bogey out & walk him. When he was young, we'd walk up & down the driveway at least a couple of times & then he would go find a spot & do his business. Then praise, praise, praise!!
