Whats the best way to potty-train a puppy? Hopefully i will be getting my new puppy 2moro, hes a tiny one who i am going to name Ronnie and hes 8 weeks old. Im new to all this and i've been given some great advice from some lovely people on here, but the most important thing i need to know is how i train my new addition to pee in the right place? Can he go outside or do i need to lay paper down 1st and then move it outside...i havent got a clue??

| I don't use pee pads, never have. My babies go outside only. I strongly suggest you crate train your new baby. It works great as long as you are consistant and I believe it will give you the quickest results. There have been a lot of discussions on crate training on this web site so I would do a search and you'll find lots of information. You'r baby is only 8 weeks old so it's going to tak a LOT of patience and time but well worth it in the long run. Good luck and congratulations on your new baby!

I've got 4 inside, everyone is paper trained, and that's the way I like it..It depends on if you're home all the time..if you go to school or work, then with such a small puppy, you just about have to pee pad train them, as they can't hold their bladders all day...I suggest an xpen, with it's bed/pee pad, water and food and toys..you can make them all different sizes. If you're home all the time and want to train him to go outside, then do just that..you can google housebreaking puppies and find a lot of ideas on how to do it..good luck..patience, love and plenty of love (sometimes treats) when he uses the pad or goes outside..remember, he's just a baby..they can't be expected to have any control over their bladders until between 12=14 weeks.

In my opinion, at 8 weeks potty training is not the most important thing. Most breeders don't allow Yorkies to leave until they are 12 weeks old. Right now it would be best to focus on keeping any sort of stress out of his life. (stress can be too much playing or handling) Keep him warm, comfortable and don't let him get over tired. Have nutracal in the house. I would give that to him 3 times a day until you see he is eating well. Then keep it handy if you see him start to shake. Now, about the potty training. An expen is a great investment. It will be your pup's "bedroom" and safe area when you can't watch him. Put a bed, water, food and a potty pad in there. If you think you may eventually crate train him, you can use the crate as his "bed" for now, but take the door off. He is too young to be crated for any length of time. These tiny dogs need food and water available. When you catch him going potty on the pad, praise him and give him a treat. If it is warm outside take him out there and if you see him potty, praise him and give him a treat. And if you see him potty when you let him run free in the house, don't make a big deal out of it. tell him no, and put him on his potty pad and say nice things about going good potty here. Good luck to you and your new baby. http://www.shooterdog.com/alexfaq2.htm

If you can't get Nutracal or Nutrastat, see if the pet store has any other kind of nutritional supplement, just to have on hand if he won't eat or gets ill. Corn syrup is another option in an emergency if you see him shaking. While you are at the store get some plain yogurt and or cottage cheese. and boil some chicken and make some rice Try to keep him on the food the breeder had him on, but if he won't eat you will have options. When I brought Shelby home my kitchen looked like a chemistry lab. I tried everything but she lived on kibble dipped in nutracal for quite a while. good luck.

I crate train..do not believe in peepads...never have. Elphaba went outside to the spot I wanted her to use before she ever set foot in the house (that was when she came home at 9weeks). Once she got a little older (13 weeks) I hung bells on both the front and back door and made her ring the bell whenever we went outside. Within 3 days she was ringing it on her own to signal me.

White karo syurp works just as well as nutrical, and you don't want to give it to them unless they're not eating or drinking..I got my first yorkie before she was 7 weeks, and never once had to use anything with her..Infact, she's almost 5 years now, and I've never had any behavioral problems with her.. Like I said as to whether you're home all day and want to train outside and get him on a schedule, or use the pee pads(if your'e gone a lot) it's all up to you..I prefer the pee pads, and have been using them for 10 years without any regret..it's entirely up to you...with him so young, I would start him on the pee pads, and if you decide to take him outside, move the pad closer and closer to the door you're going to be taking him out.. I have also used the xpen for a few years, and I love it..! Last edited by hha; 01-09-2008 at 05:43 PM.

potty training belle is 3 months old now...we got her when she was 8 weeks...i tried everything to train her...going outside right now is out of the question cause its too cold and snow...so what we have done is coralled her with an opening so she can get in and out...put her food and water dish in the same area and put pee pads or paper down along with the litter box...and she has finally got the idea that where she pees and poops i have also noticed also with her that if the pads and litter are too full she will poop else where also...i was also told when there that young to put a little bit of corn syrup in there water to keep there energy level up and it works i have had no problem with her since we brought her home
