Animal Smiley 049 Who has a well-behaved, balanced friendly dog?

Hey,

I'm still in the research stage to getting my puppy. I was wondering whether those of you with well behaved friendly dogs could share some of your tips with me.

For instance

How do you discipline your baby?

What is your exercise schudules?

How much time do you spend with your baby per day or should I say have many hours is your baby left only each day?

What diet do you have for your baby?

Just some questions for discussions.

o/t question : anybody have vegetarian yorkies? Just generally curious

I think mine is well-behaved and friendly. She likes everyone and every little or big doggy she meets.

I have never and will never discipline my yorkie. In my world, the only discipline should apply to owners and not to yorkies! She learned the word "no" at a very young age.

We walk every evening during the week that the weather allows. We spend 20, 30 or 45 minutes walking, depending on the temperature. We have a fenced yard for her, so she also gets to spend a lot of time outside when it is nice. When the weather is warm, we will usually go for two walks on the weekends.

Mine is never left alone for more than four hours at a time.

Dogs are carnivorous, so being vegetarian isn't healthy. Everyone decides their own best menu for their yorkie. Mine eats baked chicken breast and Natural Balance Ultra Premium. Plus, she gets a vitamin every day.

I use doorbells to train her to go out or go on pads in the attached garage. Good luck.

It's good to do research before deciding to get a puppy of any breed.
I did book research, did not know about YT before getting Buddy.
The books tell you the basic's but a site like YT can really educate you.

I grew up with dogs and always had one when the kids were small.
I will say that owning a Yorkie is not like owning any other breed!
They are determined, smart little things and you have to be on your
toes at all times just to stay one step infront of them.
I was lucky and did not have a problem with housebreaking Buddy.
He took to it like a duck to water. However, chewing was a big issue
when he was a pup. He would go threw a rawhide chew bone in a couple
of hours. Have since took those away and he now only chews natural bones.

He loved the training periods we did daily and learned really fast and was
eager to please. Food and toy guarding were becoming an issue when he
was about 1yr old. We worked through the food but today at almost 4
he will at times become a different dog and guard something of his out
of the clear blue. He can become aggressive at this time for what ever reason is in his head. We are still working on this issue and he has become
more reasonalble lately.
I sit daily and have for 3 1/2 yrs each morning from 6:30-7:00 playing and
training with him. Working all day it is very important to give this time to
him before leaving for work.
Socializing is so very important when they are pups.
Today Buddy is a well rounded young man. Loves most people, children,
small breed dogs, is very smart can do many, many tricks, is completely
housebroken, does not bark unless there is a reason, understands everything
that is said to him but will not go to the groomer's anymore so I have had to learn to groom him. He's just perfect and the two of us are quite a team.
I do at times think of getting another but am afraid it will come between what the two of us have going at this time. It always in my head though.
He sleeps in his bed next to mine but jumps up when I'm sleeping and cuddles with me for the rest of the night. I love it but make him go into his bed when
we turn in for the night just to show him the real bed is mine and he's a guest in it. There was an issue with him taking over the bed and not allowing me in it so this is the way I handled it.
They are determined little ones and will try and wear you down most of the time. I love spoiling him to death but try not to show him because he will
take advantage of it just like a human child.
Good luck and thank's for asking.
Oh, we go for 4 20-30mins walks daily.

I think my lily is very well behaved her only problem is the whole potty thing. I do not leave her alone very often. I am lucky to have a job where she can come. As far a exercise I am a nanny so she plays with the kids I watch all day long and we have play time every night for an hour, in the summer we go to the dog park and have play dates. I think taking her out in public helped her to be socialized. I take her to the pet store and to the park, to peoples houses when I visit so she is very comfortable in strange environments, I also just enroled her in obedience classes which we will start soon. I do not leave her for more than 5 hours at a time with out being let out of her kennel and played with by someone, I feel so guilty when I have to leave her. Also I introduced her to children early so she realizes she needs to be gentil (planing to have children in future). I do not really do what most people would call punish her if she does something wrong I tell her no in a stern voice and redirect her, she is sensitive so it is all she needed.

Mine are very well behaved but they are 3 years old. They had rambunctious periods in their youth. I am home with mine except 2 days where I work for 5 hours. I take them on 2 20 minute walks a day. I homecook for them and feed them evangers

You just want to socialize them really well when they are very young - before they turn 16 weeks of age. Let them experience different situations, different people and take them to a lot of different places and buildings as well as car rides. You should then have a well-balanced puppy that isn't nervous or barky.

well i think both my babies are angels of course but my miss buffey is extra extra good and every day i have to remind myself she is still a puppy since she is so well behaved and sweet! she is playful but such a perfect furbaby! but to answer your questions:

How do you discipline your baby? i look her in the eye and say "NO" ... we never hit, spank or yell at our babies

What is your exercise schudules? they are still babies and cannot go for walks yet (they do not have all their shots) but they play throughout the day all over the place...we watch them like hawks since we are still potty training but they get lots of exercise ... they would play all day long if we would let them!

How much time do you spend with your baby per day or should I say have many hours is your baby left only each day? my fiancé works from home so someone is always with the kids ... if we have to leave, they are never alone more than an hour to an hour and a half

What diet do you have for your baby? both babies are eating canidae food but we are slowing working in AFS raw food...so far so good! no upset tummies and they LOVE the raw...they look so sad after they have eaten it all and their bowls are empty!

i cannot say enough about miss buffeys breeder, tracey (a fellow YT member ) ... whatever she did to raise her babies, works! i cannot imagine a better furbaby then my miss buffey!

I think my Kiwi is very well behaved and friendly. I don't really ever discipline her in the traditional sense. I reward behavior I want and ignore behavior I don't want. I might say "no" if I don't like a particular behavior and it must stop immediately. Trust me, Yorkies hate to be ignored!

I think exercise is very important! We vary our walking schedule quite a bit. For example, yesterday we took a 45 minute walk. Today we are going out for 30 minutes, but that is because she has daycare. Two days a week she goes to daycare and comes home happy and exhausted. This has also helped a lot with socialization with other dogs.

Kiwi and I are taking obedience classes together, so we work on her skills in 10 minutes sessions at least twice a day. Hubby and I also spend lots of time during the day playing with her when we get the chance, she loves playing ball. She is left alone maybe a couple hours a day. She does go to daycare when we will be gone at work/school for more than 4 hours.

Kiwi is on Solid Gold dog food. She eats it up and is at a perfect weight. She eats Zuke's for treats and especially likes the salmon flavor. She is not a vegetarian, but I am! I think dogs were made to eat meat and I am not sure how they could get all the nutrients they need without meat. I can eat a varied diet to get all the nutrients I need, but dogs can't eat all the different stuff that I can.

I agree 100%, this is key to having a well balance, well behaived dog. We did this with Bella and she loves all dogs, all people. She's a great dog! Also the only discipline she gets is a firm "no" and lots of love and praise and consistency is very important when training (same as with kids )

How do you discipline your baby? I don't see anything wrong with discipline... punishment.. that's another story. When Layla is doing osmething she shoudln't i loudly say AH AH... she also knows what "leave it" means so that usually prevents her from doing whatever it is that would get her in trouble She is having a small issue with nipping at the moment... but we are working on that

What is your exercise schudules? play play play.. lol.. we play ALOT of fetch... try and get for a walk every night (in the winter.. in the summer it is too hot for her)

How much time do you spend with your baby per day or should I say have many hours is your baby left only each day? Layla is only left alone for max 3 hours if we are going out for supper or something.. otherwise she is with me, my parents or her babysitter

What diet do you have for your baby? Layla is on a homecooked- grain free diet

Just some questions for discussions.

o/t question : anybody have vegetarian yorkies? Just generally curious

hope that helps!

Chesteris pretty well behaved, I socialized him alot when he was a puppy, and took him to puppy class. He knows all of his commands sit, stay, leave it and he does not run out the door, when I open it. He loves kids, cats, people and some dogs he does not care for. For discipline I just do no or leave it, the tone of voice they can tell. They do like to be around their people alot. Chester is stubborn smart and not a big barker. They bark for a reason so I dont yell at him, usually fear, if their humans get upset they can tell. They are great watch dogs, Chester would protect me to the end. He is the best thing I ever got, they are very easily to spoil, chester is better taken care than some people take care of their kids. Enjoy and dont let them get bored, chester will pout.

I'm still in the research stage to getting my puppy. I was wondering whether those of you with well behaved friendly dogs could share some of your tips with me.

For instance

How do you discipline your baby? I say "No, No, naughty dog."

What is your exercise schudules?
I walk my dogs outside about 6 times a day. We walk approx 1/8 to 1/4 of a mile. Lucy is trained to retrieve and I throw her rabbit or coon down the hall several times a day. Monkey is a lap potato.but he does love running in the grass, laying on his back in the grass and getting as much crap in his hair as he can, and fighting with Lucy in the grass.

How much time do you spend with your baby per day or should I say have many hours is your baby left only each day? I put them in their xpen about 4 times a day for about an hour. Otherwise, they are with me. They watch me play piano, exercise, etc.

What diet do you have for your baby? Nutro

Just some questions for discussions.

I now have a different take on socialization. At first, I took my 2 with me to my friends but over time have stopped that. People do come over to visit but they are older and really not dog people. At Christmas, my daughter and her 2 children came for 10 days. The girls are 7 and 8 and their stepmother is pregnant. She has taught the kids how to hold a baby (baby due this month). Both girls carried my dogs all over the place. I think at first the dogs wanted Scotty to beam them up but by the 3rd day when the girls came in (we have a guest house) their tails were wagging so hard their whole butts were moving. The girls were very good with the dogs and I was totally surprised. I know when they left the pups missed them. Lucy and Monkey are a year and a half.

well i got Tumi at 13 weeks old and i took her everywhere with me and she got to socialize with adults and kids( with my supervision). so she loves loves everyone!! She is sooo good with kids. I walk my girls in the morning for a mile and also a mile at night! Now that the weather is sooo cold, i do that on the treadmill..thank god they are soo good with treadmill. Also they go to day care twice a week for socialization! So they are friendly with all doggies! me and my hubby spend as much time as we can with them. playing or just hanging around..they love being with mommy and daddy. we take them everywhere we go ..well..most of the time since not every place is doggy friendly. They both LOVE to be out and about! oh when tumi was a puppy, i took her to puppy kindergarten! she learned basic commands! it was more for her socialization! i got Gracie at 7 months so it was a little diff. but she was well socialized before i got her..
