| Crate/X-Pen users For anyone who uses a crate/xpen to confine your pups while you're away, at night, ect how old are they before you 'trust' them enough for free roam? Bailey's 6 months old now and still goes in his crate at night and when I'm not home but I'm wondering if he's 'old enough' now to not use it anymore? With our dogue de bordeaux we crate trained him and we used his crate with him until he was about 7 months old, after that he was allowed free roam of the house at night, and while we were gone and he's been fine (no destroying things, ect). Bailey still throws a tantrum when he has to go to bed at night (4 months of this is wearing on the nerves). What have been you guys' experiences? | hmmmmmmm ... is theres a limit (age limit) to crate training em? Chicle is 5 months and i only crate him when he sleeps at night and when i have to clean the house or when he goes in there himself.

| I don't know. I'm not a very trusting person. I would suggest you crate longer. Small dogs are kind of stuborn when it comes to potty training. As soon as you give them some freedom, they run all over you. However, if you do want to give him some more room, have you thought about babygates and confining him to a certain room(i.e. bathroom, kitchen, or laundry room)? |

| I have read until they 6 weeks without pottying in the house, that you should continue to manage where they stay.

| I would say atleast a year, just my opinion and experience with small dogs. My chloe just now gets to roam around the house at over a year and a half old. But only if I'm going to be gone no more than an hour. I just feel like she is safe in her crate, I don't want to be worrying about her when I am away. She is completely potty trained so that is not what I worry about. I keep Tinkerbell gated in the kitchen usually when I leave, because she hasn't learned to climb over the gate yet like Chloe can. I would say that I will not let Tinkerbell have free roam unless she is 100% potty trained (if that is indeed possible with her) and can fully trust her not to chew on anything. Tinkerbell chews a lot and I would hate if she got something and choked while I wasn't home. I don't feel like it is punishment or anything, it is safest place for them. I am thinking of letting Tinkerbell start sleeping with us on our bed at night maybe starting next month. She is doing so well on her potty training (no accidents for almost a month!), but I just want to make sure as her favorite place to pee USED to be under our bed when we weren't looking. So just want to be sure she won't revert back. If Bailey has just one accident while you are not home and he realizes he got away with it, he will know that he can pee while you are not there. But realistically I will probably always use their crates atleast some of the time. |

| LMAO....... trust him to roam about on his own around the apartment????? HAHAHAHAHA , YEAH RIGHT....... i keep him in his crate when im not at home, i have started this when he was 12 weeks old (for short periods of time) and gradually worked up to 8 hours...... the crate isnt just a way to cut down on accidents, damage, chewing, ect..... toby is really COMFORTABLE and SAFE in his crate...... i tried using the baby gate but he scaled it in a matter of days, if you want a larger area get a pen and make sure it has a roof on it |

| I dont crate Gucci. I do use a baby gate to keep close in a certain area. He sleeps in our bed and when she needs to go she just climbs down and goes on her pee pee pads. Gucci has free roam of the apt, but Im always there with her. When she has to stay alone for a couple of ours we always use the baby gate. Good luck in your decision. |

| I use a baby gate also for my 3 little ones. they are in the same room with me all the time. the sleep in their beds, and they go every where with me so they are not alone. they travel in my RV with me all the time and love it. if I do leave them they do just fine.. they only have 2 rooms to run around free. |

| I am wondering if anyone ever uses a large wire crate (that you would use for a big dog) for your little ones. I am just thinking on a long day maybe putting my lil' Hulk in a large crate with his pee pad and food, water and some toys it might be more pleasurable than his regular small crate he usually sleeps in. he is in an x-pen during the day while i work and is crated at night. any feedback is welcome. thanks, Mary Ann |

| I have started using a wire cage for Duncan that is for dogs up to 25lbs. I put a towel and a little food in it. No water though until I let him out because that seems to make him go more in his cage. But he is having a terrible two fit when I put him in it. I had him in the spare bedroom in his cage but he was tearing up everything he could get to. He is now in the basement since it is not finished. I hate it when I leave him in the cage because he starts having a fit. It is mainly for when I am at work or running errands. I hope he gets use to it. |
