| Punishment... I have a 9 week old Yorkie and this is my first dog. I wanted to get an idea of what to do to punish the dog when it does something bad. I've been placing the dog in the crate but I don't think its a good idea b/c the dog will have a negative association with the crate. I always say no in a firm voice or bad dog but i don't think he understands. Any suggestions or advice is welcome. Thanks |

| I have always found positive reinforcement works the best for me. I redirect his attention, and reward that behavior.

| Welcom to YT. I have always had good luck with the firm NO and then show him what he is supposed to do. Like for peepee accidents...say NO and then take him outside or the peepad or whatever. If he bites or nip...again NO. And then praise, praise, praise when he does something good. IMO never, never hit. Good luck.

| yup just get the yorkie for dummies book- it is pretty cheap and will give you ALL the info you need for your baby. I do the positive enforcement thing too- like when he pees on the puppy pad I squeal and give him a treat. When he does something bad I just use a TALL voice if it must stop. Like BARNEY NO! No, eating my shoes!!! And sometimes if it is uber bad he goes in his own bedroom for two minutes which is a clear punishment (but I am talkiing bad like taking food off my plate when I am not looking). xo b

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | A Stern voice should do it - but at nine weeks - remember he's still a very VERY Young puppy - you're going to have chewing and puppy behaviour until he develops more control of his little self - especially with things like peeing etc - |

| Your right. Never put your pup in his crate as a punishment. It should be his place to feel secure, only. A nine week old pup is a tiny baby. They know nothing about anything. You have to teach them, much like you would a child. A stern NO should be all that is needed. It will be sometime before he comprehends what is ok and what is not. Patience is key. You will need alot of patience. Good luck. I am sure things will be fine in time. |

| I clap my hands when KaCee is doing something she shouldn't (i.e. pottying on the rug, chewing on the computer cord, latching on to her brother's tail ) then I redirect her to something positive (a pee pad, chew toy) and give lots and lots of praise!
