Not Eating Enough? I just purchased a 3.5 pound female Yorkie who is 11 weeks old and appears in good health, in fact the vet said she had no health issues other than roundworm which she is getting treated for now. She has spurts of super high energy and then periods where she will nap for an hour or two. She has been sleeping through the night believe it or not without getting up and going out to relieve herself. The problem is I'm concerned that she isn't eating enough. The breeder gave us a small bag of Eukanuba dry food, little tiny pellets, that supposedly she had been eating. However, Emma doesn't seem to like the stuff at all and really has no interest in it. I switched over to another kind of puppy chow that she does seem to like, but she still is only eating perhaps 20 kibbles of it per day. I can't really find a snack she likes either, I've tried the pupcorn stuff, and a couple others, plus peanut butter, cheerios--and nothing she really responds to. She doesn't drink much water either. Does anyone know if there is a guideline somewhere as to the amounts of food she should be eating? I'm also curious to know what folks out there are feeding their Yorkies and using as incentive for training. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | welcome to YT and congrats on your new little yorkie girl. I never had much a problem getting mine to eat. she self regulated herself when she was on kibble. When she was a baby i had her on wellness puppy which she ate but didn't love. I switched her to a couple different kibbles such as merricks, and canidae before putting her on a raw diet, which she LOVES. As for treats, she loves cherrios. i gave her regular, honey nut, yogurt and frosted LOL she's not picky. now i usually just give her trats make by chattiesmom here on YT and they're called yorkie yummies. good luck with your new girl. i hope she starts eating better.

Bauer wouldn't eat much at first either. The doctor said ithappens when a puppy is adjusting to new surroundings. I was worried about him but the vet said his weight was fine and he also said, when he's hungry he'll eat. Well he was right. About three months later I couldn't get him to stop eating!!! He is still on the same food (Nutro Max) its all natural. It's not good to keep switching a dogs food. Its actually bad for their stomach and digestive systems.

when i got Boo, he was on the same stuff, Eukan, or whatever, after about 2 months, he stopped eating it cuz i guess he got sick of it, so we switched it to scientific diet, lamb and rice flavor, he loves this stuff. and been eating it for months now. the only bad thing about it, is that its too big, shoulda gone with the small bites one. but he still eats it

we had the same problem with ben and the vet said that these small puppies need to adapt to their environment. is the pup still peeing and pooping ok. Ben did so I was not that worried. I still free feed him and he is getting really big. also sometimes they develop kennel cough and was a little sick for awhile. just be patient with him and you will see he will be eating and playing around in no time soon. hope this helps.

When I first got Spike, I had the same concern, because he barely seemed to eat any of his kibble, although he was drinking from his water dish. His pees and poops were normal, though, so I didn't worry too much. I just kept track of how much food I was giving him, and kept track of how much had been eaten each day. After a while, I noticed that he was more willing to eat when I was watching him, and the same amount of food would be 'missing'. I have a theory that they are more secretive about eating when they are in a new environment. Also, because they are so small, be careful of how many treats you are giving them because even a small treat can be like a meal to them, and you want to make sure they eat their kibble because it is far better for them nutritionally. Don't worry - no puppy I've ever encountered has ever starved themselves when there is food available to them!

I had to hold the food in my hands in order to get Ambrose to eat at first.
