| Housetraining Hi. Ambrose and I went to the vet on Friday and I asked him a few questions about housetraining. Now, according to my vet, Ambrose should be completely potty trained and able to hold himself for hours at a time. Ambrose is 12 weeks old. I have taken some of my vets advice and am now taking Ambrose outside a couple of times a night so he can do his duty and have noticed a HUGE difference; however, Ambrose just cannot hold if for as long as my vet indicated. If he is in his crate or sleeping, he can hold it for only three hours and if he is up with us he'll pee on the carpet if we do not take him outside every hour. I am wonder, at what age do you think he'll be when he can hold it a little longer. I would love to be able to take him outside every coupld of hours instead of every hour... |

YT 2000 Club Member | Does your vet specialize in small breed animals? Jeter is 10 weeks and he is not yet potty trained fully, my vet said it takes a while for him to get their. Jeter will alert us that he has to go out by a whimper. I am also able to stay home all day with him so he does not spend time by himself for long. I look for him to show signs that he has to potty, like sniffing and walking in a circle, when he does this I say Jeter go potty and he will make some noise of some kind, bark, whimper and I take him out and sure enough he has to go! His vet said that he was on the right track and that if it works for us to keep it up! Good luck with your puppy!

| If the puppy is free fed, then he will of course need to go out more often. If you feed a certain amount three times a day then you will know exactly how long he can hold himself and how often he will need to go out. |

| Abby is 2 yrs. old now and it took us a good year to get her completely potty trained. That is her coming and telling us that she needs to go out side. When she was little I took her outside about every 1 1/2 hrs. and when she pottied or pooped she got a treat when we got into the house. She rarely had accidents as I was always keeping an eye on her. She stays in our laundry room when I am gone and has only had a couple of accidents when she was little. The hardest was the all night thing she had a hard time making it all night, so I was up at least 1 time a night taking her out until she was about 6 mo. She now sleeps in her crate all night and never an accident. The most important thing is to keep them confined to a small area until you are certain that they can handle not being watched all the time. I never used paper or other stuff in the house, because it made me think that they would get use to going in the house when the needed to be going outside. But we live in an area where we don't have snow so that would make a big difference. It rains here a lot in the winter and Abby hates getting her feet wet, but I usually stand out there with her until she goes. Good luck as yorkies are the hardest dog I have ever had to potty train.

| My puppy school teacher said you can estimate a pup can hold their bladder one hour for every month he is old. At 12 weeks he is doing great to hold it for 3 hours.

| I think your pup is doing great for his age. It takes them a while to be able to hold it.

Sorry but you're going to be going out every hour for a month or two at least. Get a wire crate and use it when you can't watch him so he doesn't get to practice peeing on the carpet. Keep taking him out at least once at night at another month or so. Try getting a bell for him to ring when he wants to go out. Start by practicing having him ring it when YOU decide he needs to go out, and then once he can start to hold it enough to have some freedom he can start to "ask" by ringing the bell. Mine are completely housetrained but it took over a year for Loki and 6+ months for Sam (she was already a year when we got her) Also, for crate training you generally want to take him out and WATCH him to make sure he goes, then let him run around for 30-60 mins. Then crate him for another hour and THEN take him out again and start over. This helps him learn to hold it and confines him so he doesn't pee on the carpet during times when he is most likely to need to go. Good luck!
