| Housetraining Nightmare Hello All What a great site! I have a slight problem with my yorkie and I need some expert advice on how to handle this. Our yorkie is 11 months old and semi-housetrained. What I mean is this: We taught her to go in a puppy litterbox and she does but she also will go on the carpet whenever she deems the litterbox dirty. She would also pee right outside of the litterbox onto the floor but when she poops, it is usually in the litterbox. Now, it seems, she pees onto the carpet every other day. If we take her outside, she always goes with no problem. We are thinking about taking her out some more since we are now home more often but we are also thinking about ridding ourselves of the litterbox because it is too much trouble and dirty. What is the best way to move our training method from the litterbox to the outside without confusing our yorkie? Thanks for all of the help. Mike |

| Oh my! I don't know anything about using a doggie litterbox....but if you're trying to transition from that, just take the litterbox away (IMO). Start making it 100% UNacceptable for your dog to go potty indoors. Sully is 11 mo. old (born aug. 8, 2004) and he has been housebroken for about 2 months now (luckily, no accidents, knock on wood) - but whenever Sully pooped in the house, or peed, we'd stick his nose right up to it and yell "BAD DOG! BAd! Bad!" and the poor guy would cower in shame....but he remembered and woudl do it less. Another idea woudl be going back to crate training for a month or two. Do a search for "house breaking" and crate training on this site...there are a lot of threads. Good luck!

| Totally disagree I have two yorkies and my previous yorkie was almost 15 when he died. Yelling, sticking a dogs face in it is not IMHO an appropriate way to train a dog. Since you are transitioning and say that you are home more often, I would leave the litter box as is for now. Take the pup out about every 2 hours,( he can use the litter box when you are not home). My Benni is trained and barks when he needs to go out and believe me, does not let up until I take him out. Garett is more into the pads. I would never yell at my dogs nor stick their faces in it (by the way Benni is 15 months and Garett is 14 months). Training is something that takes quite some time for yorkies. My boys are good 95% of the time, and I cannot see myself yelling at them or sticking their faces in it the other 5% of the time. Yelling makes a dog timid and fearful. When the dog uses the appropriate place, whether it is the litter box, pad or outside, praise the dog a lot, present him with a treat and tell him what a great dog he is. Dogs live to please, and he will want to please you, persistence and patience and lots of praise and treats IMHO is the answer. |

| Forgot And if your dog is finicky about the box, keep it as clean as possible. |

Good luck![/QUOTE] Excellent advise. Also, since your pup has eliminated on your carpet, if it isn't 100% cleaned and odor free your Yorkie will continue to return to the carpet. In no way am I an expert and I know you were asking for "expert" advise, but hope this helps a little. Good luck!

| My dog has accidents, but my advice would be to forgo your life for about a week and watch your dog like a hawk. Whenever he starts sniffing around, immediately take him outside. He should get the idea pretty quickly. Also, move the litterbox out of your house.

| Thanks for all of the replies. When we are not home, we want to use the litterbox for our dog since it is in the area where we keep her. We use a gate to block her in the laundry room and that is where the litterbox is. What I dont want to do is confuse her. She will go outside whenever she is out there so that is a good sign and she also knows to go in the litterbox. Recently, she now pees directly outside of the box so we started to put down newspaper lining outside of the littebox. I am not sure if I should just scrap the litterbox and just put down a peepad for when we are not there. She uses the pads when we put them out. She is a good dog and has the general idea but I think we should get into the habit of using the outside now that we can. Any more thoughts? Thanks to All !! Mike |

| I've been trying to train my yorkie to go on paper... and tried a few times outside but she won't budge and isntead ends up eating everything she finds and i spend most of my time worrying abt whats going in her mouth and trying to get it out. I'm thinking of trying the litterbox? DO they actually work? Where do you get one? I've also heard people mention of fencing an area of the yard specifically for the dog? is there something portal which I could jsut purchase for that? or do u have to build it yourself? |
