| Need help with crate training! I cant find a crate thats small enough for crate training. I bought the smallest crate I could buy at petsmart and its still too big. I have tried blocking off a section of the crate with a small cardboard box, but she peed in the crate and of course the box got all nasty. Also, I am not sure if the issue is because the crate is too big, but she tends to pee in her crate like it was routine. I take her out every couple of hours and she still pees on her self. Its frustrating because I have to wash her each time and wash the crate. I feel like I am getting no where. |

| i used a towel to shove in the back of the crate to leave no more room than what she needs to lay down. |

| you should put a huge bed inside so that it takes up the entire floor area of the crate. that way, she'll only treat the entire space as her resting area. just make sure she can move around (stand up, turn, etc.). good luck! |

| The plastic cat carriers are usually small enough.

| I don't know if you want to have her pee pad trained, but if all else fails, you can do what I did... At first I thought we weren't making any progress with Mocha at all, until a couple weeks ago. His crate came with a divider, so I made it just big enough for him to stand up, lay down, and turn around. My Mocha however, kept soiling his crate, and it would often be quite a mess. The problem was, whenever he is in there alone, he freaks out and won't stop crying/whining/barking. I've been told to never let him out when he's fussing, as it only teaches him that he will get out when he makes a big scene. Since he was constantly crying in his crate, I didn't know whether he needed to get out to potty, or if he just wanted attention. Since he was soiling his crate anyway, I decided to take a different/opposite approach. I took out the divider and gave him entire room in the crate. He has a cushion and blanket on one side, and a pee pad on the other. Now, when he has to potty, he'll always step off of his blankets and use the pad. This was much easier to clean up, and he didn't have to lay in his own mess. I found that it actually got him used to going on the pee pad. Now when I take him out, he'll walk over to a pee pad and potty on it. Before this, he only went on his pad (at his own will) twice in the span of 2 weeks. Now that I've changed his crate set up, he's been going over to his pad on his own these past couple of weeks. He still has accidents whenever his pee pad isn't close enough to him, but getting him to even walk over to his pee pad was a huge deal to me, as he would hardly ever do it before...even if it was right beside him. A lot of people would probably not suggest my method, but hey, it seems to be working for us. Hope that helps |

| Sorry I'm just getting back to you, I was off the computer during the holiday weekend. I'm not sure I can offer any good advise with her relieving herself in the crate. I was thinking she was a young puppy and not able to hold it but at 12 months she should be able to hold it for a long time. Have you had her checked by a vet to make sure she doesn't have a UTI which would cause her to have to go frequently? Normally dogs won't go in their beds but I have seen others post with the same problems. The whole key to crate training is the fact that they won't relieve themselves in the crate. Other than having her checked by a vet and making sure her space in the crate is small enough that she can only stand up and turn around in it I'm not sure what other advise to offer. Maybe others who have had the same problem can help. I wish you luck

| yeah she has been tested for a UTI, she is healthy and i know she can hold it for a while. cuz i have her crated all night, she holds it, i let her out to pee on the pad, she doesnt, not even after an hour or two of waiting...grr..~! Heres what I do, maybe someone can give me pointers on what I am doing wrong or give me advice on what I can do different... I crate her at night, she doesnt use her crate to pee in it all night. I let her out and take her to her pee spot, a pee pad. She will sit there FOREVER staring at me on what to do. I will walk her around a tad to get "things moving" and she just sits there and looks at me with this confused look. I have litterally camped out, got reading materials for myself or turned on the tv so I had something to do while waiting for her to go. And I didnt even care if she was to squat outside the pad, at least i would be getting somewhere and i could tell her no and place her on the pee pad. so after an hour or two, i place her back in her crate and to try again 20 min later. I will do this over and over, and she will just be stubborn as ever and when she cant hold it anymore, she will go inside her crate, even if I just let her out a minute ago. When I take her outside, its a different story. If i have her offleash in the back yard where she can run around and go whereever she pleases, she usually finds a spot and goes. Thats great and all, but i want her to learn to use a pee pad since its getting cold out and she doesnt like to be outside when its freezing. Is putting her back in crate even if she hasnt gone yet bad? I thought that is what you are suppose to do if they dont go. I have tried to be patient, but as with most people I cant sit there they whole day while she sits there and stares at me while i wait for her to go. You would think after being crated all night thats the first thing she would want to do.... shes a weird little girl. other than this shes is the perfect angel and the best little dog, shh dont tell her shes little though! |

She doesn't sound weird to me, it sounds like she's potty trained to go outside. I think she's confused about using the pee pad. Personally I don't use pee pads, both of mine are completely trained to go outside which is the way I like it. It gets cold here too and rains a lot but Bella doesn't seem to mind so far. If you're determined to train her to use the pee pads I would use the same technic that you probably used to train to go outside. When you take her out of the crate put her on the pad and tell her to "go potty" or what ever command you chose to use and if she doesn't go put her back in the crate. I wouldn't leave her out for more than 15 minutes and keep her on the pad, if she doesn't go then she should go back in the crate for another 15 - 20 minutes (and keep trying until she goes), if she does go make a HUGE deal about it and let her stay out of her crate for about an hour and then back in the crate. The key is she gets to stay out of the crate and play only if she goes potty in the right spot. Because she's 12 months old this could be challenging for you because it sounds like she's got it in her mind that you don't "go" in the house which is actually really great. This could be very confusing for her. Personally I'd leave things as they are with her going outside, but that's just me and I know a lot of people use the pads and that's what works best for them. Good luck!

| yeah i think she is really confused and i know she doesnt know what i want her to do. i really want her pad trained because she hates to be outside when its cold, and I live in the Mojave Desert where we get bad wind storms and she is very light and she almost gets knocked over LOL! So I am really wanting to get her trained on the pads. She also will go in the house if she has to go and I dont let her out in time. She goes when shes outside, but if she has to go, she doesnt know how to let me know shes got to go use the bathroom outside. I have no idea how to train that either I will try what you suggested. I will take her out of the crate and only wait 10-15 minutes and if she doesnt go, I will put her in. And I will try again say maybe 20-30 minutes later.. |

| Maybe you could try it in reverse and take the pee pad outside when she is going pee and keep her on the leash. Have her pee on the pee pad and praise her like all heck. Have her keep peeing on the pee pad until she chooses all on her own to go on the pad. Then move the pee pad inside (you could even do this in stages by moving the pad closer and closer to the house). I think you did such a good job of potty training her that she is scared to go potty inside and is holding it until she absolutely bursts! The pee pad means nothing to her, which is probably why she is looking so confused. Show her that it is okay to pee on the pad by putting it outside and then bringing it inside. Hopefully this will clear things up for her. And congrats on being such a good potty trainer!

| lots of great suggestions, i think that idea just might work kiwiglaze! I will keep her leashed, if she has to go, she usually goes outside right when she hits the grass. so.....i wish i would have thought of this a while ago instead of waiting hours by the pee pad inside. *sigh* |
