Problem when peeing; BEWARE: gross description OK, Watson is almost 5 months old and I've saw him do this quite a few times. In the middle of him peeing, he will reach around and start "cleaning" himself before he is done going. I've tried clapping my hands to try to get his attention away from doing this but it only spooks him and then he runs off the pad before he's done. He is my first dog, are things like this with puppies common? Is it just a dog thing and he'll eventually realize "hey, that doesn't taste good"? I miss the puppy kisses, but I'm not going to get them after that!!! Any suggestions??

| I haven't had to deal with this particular problem. It sounds like a toughie... I hope someone here has a solution for you. I can see where you can't correct him, it would give him mixed signals... I'm feeling for you.

Cocoa will sometimes sniff or look "down there" while he is peeing but, I don't think he actually licks it or gets the pee in his mouth. Maybe that is what yours is doing.

Maybe he has a UTI and he is licking because it hurts or burns. I would call the vet. Let us know.

definately, or maybe he's thirsty, lol. I have seen dogs do stuff like that. I would take him to the vet especially if his urine doesnt smell or look normal. If it smells normal & is a normal color it may just be a corky thing about him.

Thank you all! He doesn't do this all the time, if I was to put a number on it...30%-40% of the time. Yea, I am not 100% sure it gets in his mouth, maybe he is just sniffing down there (good point). If he was drinking it (this conversation is gross), I would think I would be able to smell it around his mouth and chin. His urine doesn't seem to be abnormal in any way. Any how, I'm going to keep a close eye on him the next couple of days, try to figure out what he is actually doing...if it keeps up, I'll then call the vet.
