Default Yorkie in a Bag

Does anyone carry their Yorkie around in a bag?

I used to carry Otis around all the time, sneak him into the grocery store, movies, and places he shouldn't be......but I started getting major neck problems, so I was told I can't do that anymore. I'm considering a backpack now.

I have purchased one of those front carriers, an 'Animal Planet' car seat, and a bag/purse-type thing for Biggie. Unfortunately, he likes me to hold him, and I don't have the stamina to deny him He does like that front carrier a lot actually, and often sleeps in it....I just don't use it much as it is a bit weird for me to have that thing on the front of me....Biggie is so small that carrying him around is really easy compared to finding "something" to put him into. I have found that he can't go many places with me (ie walmart, mall, grocery) which makes me sad. I can certainly see the health departments issue with this, but it still makes me sad. My front carrier was off of Ebay, and then I have a different color one from PetsMart. They have shoulder straps that cross in the back, a pad on the bottom, and mesh on the front/sides so the puppy can easily see through it. I have seen some really cute purses, but am hesitant to spend so much $$ on them as Biggie will probably end up in my arm, and the purse will end up in the closet

I hope no one here works for the Department of Health, but I used to sneak Otis into grocery stores and restaurants all the time. I haven't snuck him into a restaurant in a while, so I don't know how behaved he'll be.

Here's some links to dog carriers....and also the site that made the bags Elle Woods from Legally Blonde carried her dog in.

A lot of places in Seattle are actually Yorkie-friendly. I put my Yoda in my jacket (with his head popping out) while going grocery shopping and I haven't had a problem anywhere. I make sure I don't let him chew or get near any food or touch any food, of course. There's even a nice, fancy hotel downtown that lets Yoda into their restaurance.

When he was really little, we'd take him to restaurants, but we haven't done that in a while. I think he'll yelp a bit here and there because he will smell the food. If he's in a carrier at a restaurant, most places should be okay with it, as long as you don't let him roam around or he doesn't cause a commotion.

The only place around here that isn't pet friendly is Starbucks! Other coffee shops and tea places usually don't have a problem. Perhaps if Starbucks lets little Yorkies in, they'll have to let in the big 200 pound dogs, which is what they want to avoid? Oh well, we don't visit Starbucks all that much anyways.

I did that one time! I was trying to sneak Otis into a hamburger joint, and a cop walked passed us and said, "That's an abnormal growth coming out of your neck."

Did the cop care at all about going into a restaurance Junebug? I never really looked into rules or regulations about bringing your pets anywhere. I just know that if your dog is an assistant to a blind person that it is allowed ANYWHERE. Too bad Yoda can't pass off as one of those. heheh

He didn't say anything at all! I was scared he was going to tell us to leave, but he got more of kick out of seeing us like that than caring about health regulations.

The only place I've been kicked out of is WalMart. Otis was IN his bag, and the security man still caught him.

I've actually seen a Yorkie being pushed around in the child seat of a shopping cart at Target before.

Hmm I guess it just all depends on the local store. It's probably not allowed technically, but some stores may choose not to enforce it or be lax about it. I know they definitely don't want big huskies in their stores unless it's a blind-assistance dog. I, myself, as a customer, wouldn't want a dog that big around either. But small dogs in their own confined space and that don't bother anyone else, is fine, in my opinion at least.

The only place so far that Toto hasn't been welcomed was Wal-Mart in Ft. Walton Beach. She was in my bag sleeping for most of the shopping but woke and heard voices and out popped her head! We figured it would be just a matter of time before we would be asked to leave so made short work of our shopping and sure enough the guy at the check-out said something! I just don't shop at Wal-Mart much anymore [my husband usually just picks up things we need from there and we make it a practice to shop where she is welcomed!] Usually if she is in my bag most people don't even notice and if they do ... just think she is toooo cute! So ... that's where I spend my money! We use common sense ... but if there are no foodstuffs present ... what's the problem? We found that the nicer restaurants [with outdoor dining offered] actually welcomed her! Their philosophy is ... you came here to relax, which includes your pet ... so you are ALL welcome! She just sits in her bag looking cute and flirting with everyone while we enjoy our meal! [she isn't a beggar]

We don't go much to places that don't welcome Yoda either! And lots of outside dining areas here in Seattle do allow pets. Yoda is actually pretty good when we are out and doesn't beg. I think he knows he can get away with begging at home, but if we are out, begging might lead us to not bring him places anymore. Or something. Yoda's one smart fella.

Yoda IS a smart fella! The intelligence of the Yorkie amazes us every day! And ... believe me ... it takes a lot to amaze MY husband! The breeder had already warned us that Toto had a BIG mouth when it came to barking ... she was the loudest of her little litter. She didn't bark at all the first night we had her [why should she? ... she was set up in her "Rattan Palace" on a chest eye level with our bed, had weewee pad, water, little comfy bed, nightlite, and a chew toy!] Next day after we played with her all day [sometimes on our bed] she began to longingly look at us and bark! We knew it would be much better to nip it in the bud [why lay awake afraid you might squash a 1 1/2 lb. Yorkie while SHE slept?] So, we used what we had learned from the many training articles we had already read, when they do something you don't like ... you should do something they don't like! Every time she barked ... we tapped on her metal gate with a metal object! That's all it took [about half dozen taps [not whacks!] ... and she HATED it! From then on she was quiet all night! We DO sometimes allow her to sleep in our bed ... but she knows it's our choice, not hers! She is such a joy!!!

Every Yorkie owner I've met in person tells me they let their Yorkies sleep on their bed with them. It's just too hard not to! I think they are great little heat warmers too.

Hi chrstna. I looked at that site and the bags are awesome! There are so cute and come in so many pretty colors and designs. When you get yours Please let me know how it is working out, how your dog likes it, and how you feel carrying it. I want to order one soon, if you like yours. Thanks.
