| My new yorkie wont play I got a new yorkie about 3 weeks ago and he still doesnt play much. He will sit in my lap and let me pet him and he sleeps lot. My mom said at first he probably just wasnt used to us at first and was probably a little depressed because the owners before had other dogs. He is 3 but they didnt have him that long. I also have a 3 year old nephew that is sometimes a little mean to him. Can anyone please give me any tips please? Also do you know any games we could play or toys he might like? Thanks |

Have you had yorkies in the past? He may have a sad past, since you said his previous family didn't have him very long. If he came from a puppy mill, he has probably never learned to play. Generally, they like squeaky balls and other soft, squeaky toys. Be sure he has a safe place to go, where he can feel secure, when he wants to sleep. Do you have a harness and leash so you can take him for walks? Never put a collar on him for walks. A collar can damage his delicate trachea. Be patient and praise him liberally when he does something good. In fact, praise him regularly and let him know what a good boy he is and how proud of him you are. He may have been mistreated by other small children, so I would definitely get a handle on that situation immediately. To allow it to continue is cruel.

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Welcome to YT and congrats on your new dog! Give him time to get used to you and the new home. And definitely keep the nephew away from him unless you are supervising. If the kid lives in the same house, you need to be VERY firm about teaching him the appropriate way to play with a dog. It could be a good experience for both of them. If he hasn't had anybody to play with since he was separated from his litter, he may need to learn how much fun it is. Maybe you could start with him and a toy in your lap... (we love the skinneez toys that are flat furry things with one or two squeakers and no stuffing), and get him interested in the toy. Then throw it just far enough from you that he has to get out of your lap to get it. When he brings it back to you give him lots of love and praise and let him keep it for a while. That might help him to learn that playing is a fun thing and has rewards. Just thinking, too... are you taking him for regular walks? If he's not very active, you might need to get him moving more by walking him frequently. It will be better for his health (and yours, too). Please keep us posted on how he's doing! |

| My nephew is slowly learning things he cant do to poor little ozzy. He gets in trouble when he does and sometimes ozzy bites him a little and my nephew laughs. But I think he will learn soon to be nice to him. And I will start taking him on walks when it gets a little warmer but I think it might be too cold out for him right now. I have a collar for him for when I take him out to use the bathroom but I dont pull on it ever because he knows not to go to the street. And sometimes my parents take him out without the leash. But where can I get a harness at for him? |

It's really the safest option. Attaching the leash to a collar can hurt your pup. Yorkies are prone to collapsed trachea.

I take mine for a walk practically every single day. Yorkies love to play in the snow. They just can't stay too long when it's very cold. Just use common sense. They need exercise in order to be mentally and physically healthy. If you ever have any questions, please feel free to ask.

| Hi there and welcome to YT! in extreme weather conditions, i keep mine inside. Some yorkie's do not even like going outside if it is rainy or too cold. The colder it is , the less time you ought to spend outside. Buy sweaters or jackets for him. You can even buy booties. Petsmart, Target, Walmart , Petco all have a doggie section. I would not allow your nephew to be mean to your yorkie. your yorkie is adjusting , and has had a hard life .... Little kids can learn to handle a small dog, but, only under direct supervision. The moment the child is mean, then it is over. Take the yorkie into a safe room , and give your new dog lots of TLC.

| You should never take a Yorkie outside without a leash. Something may scare him and cause him to run into the street and get hit by a car. Or a big dog may get lose in your neighborhood and could try to attack him, you would have no way to protect him with no leash.

| Just asking because you have not mentioned but has he been vet checked? If not you should take him to have a wellness check. As stated above keep your nephew away from him for now. Your baby might lash out and bite him. The above has great advice. I wish you the best. |

| I maybe blind but I did not see the age of the furbaby. So I will assume a puppy. Puppies sleep a lot and he may feel more secure being close to you, I know Andy did Start with small toys and interact with him. Soon he will have a favorite maybe for now give a small stuffed animal. I hate to say this but allowing your nephew to play with your pup is a no no these little ones are can be hurt easy and he may by being mean to him create a mean pup. This you do not want. Does the puppy have it's own blanket, sweaters, coat etc these things are important. Good luck and keep us informed

| Ok thank you everybody. Yes I have a leash that I do use for him for potty breaks. I got it the day after I got him because the first day he ran out in the street and almost got hit ): luckily there was a guy walking and he got him after he crossed the street so he didnt run away. But since I only have a collar and leash and not a harness yet, I havent taken him on walks. I was going to yesterday because it was so nice but I didnt want to take a chance without a harness. Yes my little baby does have clothes. The previous owners gave me a coat for him, and he now also has a shirt he wears alot..well until he gets it dirty haha. An he also has a little fleece jacket. I cant wait until I get some more money to spend on him. And he is 3 years old, sorry I didnt say if it was months or years. |

| Good Luck with your new doggie!! I would get a harness so he can go for walks wearing a sweater or coat for the cold weather. Please don't let your nephew be mean to the dog. Keep them seperate if you have to. I had a friend who had a yorkie and her kids were so rough and mean to it and the dog became very nasty and afraid and had to be rehomed. Maybe your dog would enjoy playing with a ball or soft stuffed animal. |
