| kong for puppies? hi all! i am going to be the proud owner of a new yorkie pup in a few short weeks and am busy getting the house ready for him! i've noticed a lot of talk about kong balls and so I went to a local pet store to check them out... for a puppy is it better to get the mini kong or should i get a regular size??? i am worried the regular sized kong ball will be too big for that lil precious any words of wisdom??? also anyone else know of any other great toys for the lil ... this is my first yorkie, and first small indoor dog so I plan on spoiling it rotten!!!! also I bought a pack of puppy pads and without looking at the size opened the bag.. the pads are huge!!!! is it ok to cut them in half ??? or is it best to leave them full size? last but not least... i am worried about crating my dog... if i keep it in a confined space say the size of a bathroom or a kitchen would that be sufficient??... i just cant imagine a being happy in such a small space while i'm away.. |

| Congrats! I have the puppy kong, (mind you Harley is maxed out at 3lbs). I'm not a fan of puppy pads, seeing you don't have your puppy yet, I recommend some research. I use the grid system and it's great. I've posted some info on it I think the thread was called "WIZDOG or UGODOG" as we were chatting about some existing grid products, but I posted some info on how to make your own. It's a lot cleaner and cheaper, and many dogs also have more success being able to go both indoors and outdoors with the grid, whereas some dogs that are peepad trained wont go outside. As for confinement, it's personal choice. With Harley, he was started on the grid before he came home, and had very few accidents. We crated at night (Harley actually got through 8 hours on his first night home without needing to get up... we were lucky), and then confined to a small hallway for the rest of the day. We started with like a 4x4 area, with his crate, and his grid. Then each week without mistakes we made it bigger, until he had the whole hallway, and eventually his own room. I prefer it that way, just be warned, the less you confine the more likelihood for a back fall in training later on if you increase their play space too fast. Good luck

| HI and welcome to the club. I have the puppy kong and my Yorkies don't play with it very much, maybe because it's to hard and to big for their mouth. But you have to try it and see. You have all the questions that all of us had before getting our babies home. The thing is that you have to try everything out and see what works for your baby, because there isn't any rules that will work in any case. Off course crating is the wise thing to do but you will see for yourself that some times you won't like having your baby in the crate. Also when you're in the house your puppy will feel safer if he can see you through the crate instead of being alone in another room. About pee pads. I use them full time for more than a year now and I'm very happy with them . Don't try to cut them in half. First of all you'll see that your puppy will use all of it and second if you cut them the pee will lick from the side. As far as toys are concerned, you'll soon find out that you'll never have enough. If you read some of the posts here, you'll see that we all spoil our babies to the maximum and we love it. You can get big small soft hard toys and try them. Your baby will tell you what he or she prefers. Get your puppy home, get to now him and then come back here and ask all the questions you have, we'll all be here to help. We all started like you. Welcome, Maria |

| When we got Sophie we bought her the puppy kong and she liked it. Now that she's a bit older and 5 lbs it's still the perfect size and she loves it even more. I have to say it's her favorite toy even when we just put her regular kibble in it.
