Destructo Dog Bilbo has turned into Destructo Dog--he demolishes stuffed toys in 15 minutes, devours chewies in the blink of an eye, chews the fuzz off of tennis balls. It's gotten so bad that his only toys are socks with knots tied in them, a baseball and an Xtreme Kong. He tore up one of those ropes with the tennis ball attached, chewed a hole completely through one of those squeaky loofa toys and as a bonus, scattered the stuffing everywhere. But I want him to have cute fun toys. Any suggestions?

LOL sorry for laughing but boy did your thread bring back memories! I found that the only toys that Buddy did not tear apart were those made from vinal. Not plastic but vinal. They are alittle more expensive but he never chewed one up. Also only natural bones to chew on as well. I tried the sock in knots also and he chewed the threads off the socks so I was afraid of fragments going into his system so no more socks. There was nothing on the market he could not tear apart. I gave up and the above is all he get's. Actually today at 6 he dosen't care about toys anymore unless I'm playing with him. | |

Try a Ty Bow Wow Beanie toy, available at PetSmart or online. Most material toys couldn't stand the test of my little destruction expert, but for some reason he hasn't ruined a single Bow Wow in the 8 months that we have had them. They are stuffed animals with squeakers, so you will want to supervise at first to make sure that Bilbo doesn't demolish it. Also, if you try these toys, make sure they are Bow Wows and not regular Ty Beanie Babies, which have plastic eyes -- potential choking hazard. The other thing I do is sew little stuffed shapes out of polyester materials that have a tight weave -- can't get their teeth into the material to tear it apart. I fill the toys with inexpensive batting that is washable. Most of the toys I see at the pet stores are made of fuzzy materials that my guy eats. String toys are out of the question for us too.

Pann plays with my old beany babies he loves them and doesn't kill them, and its a money saver lol good use for my old toys. We started using them when we brought him home as someone for him to sleep with so he wouldn't be alone, and they've become his favorite things.

chewer Oh, I'm so glad that Belle is not the only dog that destroys toys When we first got her she had a whole toybox of toys, now she's down to about 4. She ate all the stuffed ones, shredded the ones with strings, stripped all the fuzz off the tennis balls, ate the ears and feet off the vinyl ones and in her spare time she ate my couch pillows and a couple of rugs. I keep buying toys that are guarenteed to last, but apparently they don't know about Belle I finally started making toys for her out of things around the house. Her very favorite is her empty Welch's grape juice can with a tennis ball in it. The ball won't come out so she can't chew it up. She puts it on the floor and runs at it and shoves her nose inside and picks it up and throws it in the air. I can't believe how high she can throw that thing. Our Lab runs for cover when she plays with that as he's been gonked on the head several times. She does this for hours. Her other favorite is an empty plastic water bottle, I put her dry kibble in it and put the cap on really tight. She loves it, not really good if you are trying to talk on the phone or hear TV but they love the rattle. I have to keep my kitchen cabinet closed tight that my tupperware is in as she raids that all the time. I couldn't find her one day and was really worried, I kept calling her but she didn't come or bark. I went into the kitchen and the cabinet door was open a little ways, I saw her peeking out from inside, she must have thought she found heaven!

Thanks for all the great suggestions. Yesterday after work, we went out into the backyard since it was the first nice day we've had at home since the first of the year and 2/3 of the snow was melted. He found a frisbee and started playing with it. It was hilarious. I would throw it and he would chase it and try to pick it up. When he finally picked it up, he was running around with it in his mouth. The frisbee was a big as he is. I think part of his problem is that he hasn't had his outside exercise as much since the weather has been so bad. Come on spring!

These posts bring back the most wonderful memories I have of my yorkie. He loved tearing up his stuffies, chasing a water bottle around and loved going into my cabinet...although it was filled with his snacks and not tupperware so we had to put a childproof lock on it. I miss his antics!!

My "kid destructo" eats up or tears up almost everything we bring home, too, but my husband found the best toy the other day. Neo has so much fun with it and we do too! It's called a Babble Ball . It has a pre-recorded talking chip in it and for some reason it just appeals to the little booger. The ball comes in three sizes and can be found at Bed Bath and Beyond. I'll bet your baby will love it too, and it is hard for them to chew it up.

| Jack is 2 and we were sure that he came with the Chipper/Shredder attachment installed. He would chew anything, especially wood. He rounded off the front corners of the grandfather clock & the new oak window sill in the LR got a good chomping. DH is still trying to get over that one. He seems to have out grown the chewing urges & just destroy's toys now. Rocky never chewed much, only shredded the fuzz from the tennis balls....until I had his teeth cleaned for the first time last year, He was 7. The tech told me that his teeth were exceptionally clean but it took her the longest time to unthread the tennis ball fuzz from around his front teeth. It had bunched up under his gums & could have caused infection. Out went all of the tennis balls.

Darwin's favourite safe toy is the largest size nylabone. It's actually our 3/4 Great Pyrenees's chew toy and they both love it. It's pretty funny seeing a Yorke chewing on a nylabone that size. Darwin chews for 1/2 an hour at a time. I'm assuming he'll have pretty strong teeth. He also loves plastic pop bottles but they are not safe as he's been able to take off a jagged piece of plastic.
