YT Addict | Doesn't know how to play with toys! I adopted my lil 7 year old about a week ago, and when I tried to play with her with some toys (a soft disc, a tennis ball and one of those tug ropes) and she just looks at them all confused like she has no idea what to do with them! She won't even fetch. Is there an easy way to get her to play? I have heard of using the toys that you put treats in, but since we are also trying to train her for basic commands we don't want to give her even MORE treats. Are treat toys really the best way to introduce toys to a dog? Will that even get them to understand to play?

| I adopted Peek a Boo at 5.5 years old. He'll be 13 in December. He never played with toys, and to this date, I have only found 1 tiny teddy bear that he likes but only plays with it when I play too. Other thing he likes is trying to catch moving hand under covers/blanket. I still buy toys for him, that I think he may like or show interest in, but to date, I haven't had much luck. He also gets in a closed cat tunnel thing and rolls around (having a good rub), it looks like he's having fun. I just keep trying different things.

| I adopted Jada at age 2. She wouldn't play with toys either. One day my granddaughter was playing with some small stuffed toys and she picked up a little stuffed dog and started carrying it around. She would play with the small stuffed dog toys and thats about it. We adopted our little Bogie at age 8 mos. We had Jada about 2 mos before we got him. He just loves playing fetch and tug of war and since we got him Jada has started playing with toys more. I think watching him has taught her how to play. She is a lot smaller then him and her tug of war play is so funny you have to just hold whatever she is pulling on cause her little mouth she can't really pull we just pretend she is really tugging on it.

| I think some dogs just don't really like toys! Jackson was like this for almost the first year of his life but in the past few months, he's suddenly into them, but only at certain times, usually night time we play a game of fetch inside. He's a little over 1 year old now.

YT Addict | Aww such cute stories. I try ever so often with the tug of war rope or throwing the ball or disc around. The disc is like a stuffed toy really with a squeaker in the middle. She just has no idea what they are for though I try to show her. She doesn't even know how to retrieve, which I know is a trainable trick but its said that its best to train 1 thing at a time and we're doing basics at the moment so that will have to come later if she doesn't get it on her own some other way. I am wondering if I should splurge and buy a toy or two that holds treats for them to get, she would smell the treats and possibly play with the toy. It might trigger it? I don't know if there is a better way to get her interested. She is our only doggie at the moment so there's no influence in that regard.

| I adopted my 2 year old last summer and he didn't play either. I bought him a really soft squeeky toy @ Walmart. I squeeked a few times and then bounced it on the floor. He just ran after it and started "killing" it. It's so soft that it squeeks as he bites on it, and it rolls around when he brushes by it. I think it must be the "killing a prey object" that he loves. He has no interest in stuffed toys. Just the soft squeeky ones. |

| Most yorkie love small stuffed toys. Try one that make like a paper noise or a "hide a squirrel" stuffed toy. Also, a stuff Kong might trigger her interest. Or a plastic cat toy ball with the little bell inside( DOLLORAMA). But don't let her alone with it as she could chew on it and swallowed a piece. Or what about doing some agility with her? Just a suggestion. I think some dogs are just more playful then others. Just like for us. Good luck with everything. |
