I'm wondering if I can have some input from everyone regarding how they socialized their pups to grooming, especially for longer coats. I've never had a long hair dog before that has required this much grooming. I look at these show dogs who have to go through so much and I wonder how the heck do you even start? I know one bad incident can have a major affect and I don't want to ruin my puppy's experiences! Where and when should I start? I'd really like to let his coat grow out to a fuller length. Thanks!

I was wondering if there was an actual store or website if not that selles inexpensive yorkie hair products. My mother in law is buying some grooming supplies for my Fiona for Chistmas, but I have to find them. I want something for everyday. I need a good shampoo, conditioner, brush (not even sure which one I should be using) and even some of those little bands that won't break her hair. I would love to drive to a store and purchase all these things but not sure if there is one here. Can't spend a lot of money but she needs something. Her hair is drying out with now. I have never used anything made for yorkies. Anyone know of a good place to find all these products that won't break the bank?

I've lived at my house 12 years, I've had other pets (Yorkies included) and I've never had the problem with fleas I've had this year. This year, I don't know, the fleas have been God awful. I've never seen anything like it. Ziggy has his heartworm pills (which helps with fleas), his frontline (specifically for fleas), a flea spray (BioSpot) and I give his a bath with medicated shampoo once a week. HE STILL HAS FLEAS! And not just one or two, its like 20-30.

I have no idea what to do. I'm scared of putting more pesticides on him because I don't want his skin coming off, but I don't want him to get eaten up either. Are you guys having this problem? Are the fleas just bad everywhere this year? Its really got me concerned. Someone reccmmended undistilled vineagar, and that worked better than anything- but then he constanly reeked of vinegar.

Flea collars scare me because of the harsh pesticides in them. (Carbaryl Use In Flea Collars to Cease - Paw Nation)

Ziggy is ten months and he's a lighter colored yorkie. (Someone told me that the lighter colored dogs get fleas worse than darker colored dogs.) When Buttons was alive he never had a problem, but he had that blue skin too, so maybe that helped. I'm from SC, btw. So maybe its a regional thing?

Please help us before they eat us up!!!

I am thinking about just doing my own grooming for my little one but have a few questions, most are just comparisons. I feel it's important to have all of the information I can get before going into this, so that I can be sure to get the right equipment and not having to take a bunch of wrong items back. :P So here goes..

1 ~ I am a bit confused why people are buying clippers that are specifically for pets, what exactly is the difference (besides vibrations)?

2 ~ Why do you need a mini clipper (like the tid-bit or peanut) for doing potty areas? Wouldn't a normal one work the same?

3 ~ Are Andis and Wahl the only good clipper brands or does it really matter as long as they are made for pets? What are the deciding factors?

4 ~ If regular clippers are more uneven than pet clippers when clipped, how does that happen?

5 ~ Is uneven clip correctable if for instance you had regular clippers already? If so, how?

6 ~ Why do you need rounded shears AND pointed shears? What is the significance of what the tip of the shears is (as in, do they have different cutting look or something)?

7 ~ Is there anywhere I could find a cheaper grooming table with arm and lead besides the $35.99 one from petedge?

So I took my Bella to the groomer's yesterday because her matts were getting a little out of control and the groomer told me that her matts were so severe that she had to shave Bella. I would have added a picture except my pictures exceed the maximum KB to post. But basically she's shaved right down.

I'm worried how this will affect her coat...she's 6 months and she still has her puppy coat (although I don't know how you can tell if your puppy is growing their adult coat) and I've heard that shaving them is a no-no when they still have their puppy coat - Is this a myth? Should I be worried?

Hi All -

I've just started grooming all three of my Yorkies and came across a grooming DVD which featured the use of curved shears. I started looking at the ones that PetEdge has online and have two that I am looking at:

PetEdge: Shark Fin Silver Line Curved Shears

PetEdge: Oster Black Laser Shears 8" Curved

The Sharkfin one has kind of an odd handle that supposed to be good for repetitive motion.

Does anyone have experience using either of these? or do you have recommendations on curved shears that you have or have used in the past?

Thanks!!!

I was wondering if anyone who shows their yorkie could comment on what goes in to getting their coat soooooo perfectly straight. Do you use a straightener or products to get it that way? Are some yorkies just chosen because their hair is pin straight naturrally?

I am just curious because Paddy has a very silky coat that brushes out to just a little bit of waviness. But when he first gets out of the bath and shakes out his back end hair curls up into ringlets. He looks like a wannabe poodle.

I have no intention of getting rid of his adorable curly qs but it just seems to me that a lot of work must go in to getting their hair soooo straight. And I also just think its so facinating that there are so many variations in coat and I'm still not sure whats considered the right one.
