My life has turned upside down since last night. I was in the kitchen cooking for the furbutts a new batch of food, when I noticed that Missy, my 13yo shih tzu was lying in the middle of the living room, breathing very heavily, in a huge pool of her own urine! That's the last time I remember my world the way it used to be....

It was around 11pm. I threw a coat on top of my pj's and rushed her to the nearest emergency clinic. By the time i got there her gums were all white, she had very low heart beat, she was panting even heavier, and I was told she could be going into shock. They told me that they need to keep her overnight to stabilize her, and do some tests to find out what it is that's doing this to her! Gave me her collar and sweater and told me to pay a deposit of $3000 and go home! Well, I paid the deposit but didn't go home until they told me that she is in ICU, a bit stablized, and they are doing tests on her and they will call me as soon as they know anytihng. I would have stayed there all night, but I was worried sick for Sushi and Mr.Big that were all alone at home. So I went back home.

About an hour later they emerg vet called me. He told me that so far they have done some preliminary tests and they can tell it's the heart that's failing, and her lungs are filled with fluids, and basically she is drowning. she was diagnosed with an early stage heart murmur a few months ago but the vet had decided to just monitor ir for now. She is also in early stages of kidney failure.

The emerg vet told me that they have to give her this medication to control the situation. It is going to be hard on her kidneys, but if thay don't she won't make it through the night. I gave them the go ahead. then they had to ask me the most difficult question of all: If she stops breathing, should we resuccitate her or should we let her go?!!.... I don't know how much you guys can relate to being in that position, but it felt like they were ripping my heart out of my chest. I asked the vet what he would do if it was his own dog. He told me it would be the humane thing to let her go if it gets to that point. Because she would immensely suffer if they get on her and try and bring her back, and even if they manage to do that (which would be very unlikely that she would in fact come back), that might give her another few weeks of misery. Not a good quality life that you would want for your loved one. So I told him if he thinks that's the right thing to do, then let her go in peace.

Please please don't judge me for having said that. At that point all I could think of was making sure she doesn't suffer. Oh god, please forgive me if I made a mistake.

The vet told me that he's not too certain that she will make it through the night. But he will call me if anytihng happens. He told me to be "prepared".All night I was sitting in bed with Sushi and Biggie, holding her collar in my hand and begging begging begging god to give her strength, to bring her back home to me, to give me a bit more time with her, so I could hold her tighter and longer in my arms, to spoil her even more than before, and to make her chicken which she goes absolutely crazy over.

I got a call early this morning that she made it. She is far from being perfect, still in ICU, still very dependant on the oxygen tent, but at least she's alert. They even told me she is being very affectionate and super cute, and making the staff melf for her.

A cardiolgist is seeing her this afternoon.(another $1000, yikes!). And then she will decide if it's ok for me to see her, or if the excitement would put too much strain on her weak little heart. It's up to the cardiologist to decide if and when she can come home. But they said maybe tomorrow afternoon, if that.

All I can do right now is sit her at work, with my cellphone right in front of me, and pretend that I'm actually getting some work done. Everytime the phone rings i almost wanna faint.

Since I came home last night without missy, Sushi has been a total pain. She's very jittery and irritable. She comes and curls herself up on my lap, stares at me and gives out these little whimpers every now and then. i'm sure she is picking up on something, she's very sensitive.

I apologize for the super lengthy post, I just had to get it off my chest. I can't sleep, i can't eat, and surprisingly I can't even cry. I constantly feel this lump in my throat that just doesn't wanna come out. I know she is not going to be with me forever, but all I can ask for is just a little more time.

Hey guys its been a while since I been on here! But I just moved to Florida and with the move its been hetic. But anyway I have an Emergency question? This am my 3 1/2 year old yorkie woke up at 6:30 am she was disoriented and shaking all over and was off balance and couldnt walk her head was turning to one side and her eyes looked like deer in headlights, I could tell she was scared I yelled for my husband to wake up I held her very close and kept telling her it was alright we rushed her to the ER vet her in Saint Pete FL and she was acting normal by the time we got there? They said for us to bring her home and keep and eye on her and try to video it if it happens again? Im so worried I dont what to do? she acting normal now? I dont where to go from here? They mentioned maybe a seizure, or muscle spasm? They said they just couldnt diagnose without seeing the episode which I totally understand! Please help if any of you have experienced this.
4 years ago we lived down here before moving back to KY for 3 and our other yorkie we had starting presenting the same symptoms but Tiki my dog now isnt as severe. We had to put the other dog in ICU for 5 days she got better on her on and then a month later she relapsed and ended up dying they never figured out what it was but the vets were looking into COON HOUND SYNDROME which is very rare disease you get from raccoons? But I am just panicking because Tiki wasnt acting like that with same symtpoms as the other yorkie!? Please Help!

ava got really sick yesterday and i had to take her to the hospital; she was vomiting a lot and some blood in the vomit; they did blood test and her amylase enzymes was high; her white blood cell counts was low and i believe her platelets was low too; i dont have the papers with me; i will get them today when i pick her up from the hospital. she was diagnosed with pancreatitis because of the amylase high levels. so now i dont know if she has both gastritis and pancreatitis. anyway i spoke to the vet today; ava is on IV fluilds and they will prescribe presciption diet for pancreatitis; i am assuming royal canin which can have meal and by products so i am not sure what to do;
i had ava on the honest kitchen which is a pretty good food; but sometimes when she doesnt eat breakfast i give her baby food; and maybe that's what triggered the pancreatitis.
so what should i do about the RX diet royal canin; what if she doesnt eat it; she's very picky eater. any suggestions?
should i put her on royal canin for a while and then switch her back to the honest kitchen;
or should i give her chicken and rice for a while instead?

thanks much

Hey everyone! I haven't been on as much lately, I hope you're all doing good.

Last week we took Meeko in for his semi-annual check up and his blood work came back with a slightly elevated alp levels. The vet called after getting the results in and had us do an acid bile test. He said the difference from before and after the food they gave him was 51. He said that he'd be very concerned if it was 100 or over. Since is was half the amount, it wasn't a liver shunt. He suggested not changing his diet and to continue doing what I'm doing now and we'll retest him in 6 months. We also went over the different symptoms to keep an eye out for and to call him if I noticed any changes in his behavior.

Meeko just turned 2 years old 3 weeks ago. He's extremely hyper and playful and I haven't noticed any of the symptoms at all. I know that a lot of proteins are bad but, as far as food what should I do. Right now he's eating Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Duck. It's guaranteed analysis says it's crude protein amount is 21.0% minimum. Is that too much? If so, what amount should I look for? As far as treats, he eats cheese, peanut butter, fruits and vegetables and bully sticks. I've stopped giving him bully sticks because that's all protein.

I'd just like as much information as possible and about the protein % he should be getting. Thanks in advance!!!

So our puppy (9 months old boy) has not been eating his kibble for the past 2 days. Then today, his poo was runny in the morning. Then when we got home, we found throw-up and pee on our rug. He rarely has pee accidents. And he was really really lethargic. Waaa :( :(

He's usually very hyper and energetic.

We got worried so I gave him some nutrical then gave him some meat, yogurt, and salmon. (Because we figured he needed to get his energy up somehow.)

He seems better and seems like he has more energy than before we fed him. He's playing too. He seems back to normal...

Does anyone have any idea why he isn't eating his kibble? Was he just lethargic because he didn't have food in him? Or could he have had a bug? Why would he throw up? What should we do?

By the way, his kibble is Blue Buffalo Chicken for puppies. He went through phases of liking it/not liking it. But he's done so well on it for a while...

Did any of your dogs not like Blue Buffalo? Have you tried something else that's both nutritious and tasty to them?

Thank you.

Hey all,

My little guy isnt doing so well. I don't know what happened. Left for work this morning around 7:30 and he was fine. My sister was home around 2 pm and when she went to feed him, he didn't eat. She said he threw up around 3. At 4 I was home and when he was lying with me watching tv, he threw up again and it was neon yellow in colour and was not foamy at all. He just had a diarrhea attack in my house now as well.

What's wrong with my little guy? He couldn't have eaten any foreign object or anything as he is essentially bound to his crate or to lying on my lap because he is still recovering from luxating patella surgery. He is 7+ days off his meds.

I switched his food up last week from Royal Canin Mini Puppy to Fromm Grain-Free Surf & Turf Kibble which he really likes.

He's completely fine, alert, responsive, etc. I'm a little worried, whats going on with my little buddy?

Ok Mia has had these inverted sneeze "type" fits for a week. She does a little cough thing too. It started late late last Monday night. First thing Tuesday morning I took her to the vet. Of course she wouldn't do it there. So they checked her out and sent her home to be monitored. We also got a blood panel done (it turned out amazing). She continued on the next day so we took her back and she stayed there all afternoon for observation. The vet said he think's she may have a kind of a "cold" is the way he explained it. She is on wet food and I have been trying to video tape the episodes with no luck. She has water "like" liquid coming out of her nose when she does a real sneeze. I'm worried because she still seems like she's suffering.

She is still playing and eating fine, but I think it is so strange it just started one day. There are no new cleaners/detergents etc... in our house.

The vet offered a general antibiotic if I want but I don't know if we should get it for her. she is 4 months and 3.3 lb.

Sorry about the long message but I would sure love some advice!!!
Thanks

My little Brody (14 months old) is in kidney failure and the vet wants us to give him fluids at home. My daughter went to the vet and learned how to do it but when it came time today to do it we had trouble. He cried and bleed a little and then the needle fell out before we got any fluids into him. It was a big disaster. We know we need to do this to help keep him alive as long as possible but how do we get past the fear of hurting him? Does anyone else have to do this to their babies? :(

:confused:My yorkie received a rabies and bordatella vaccine yesterday around 11am. By 7pm I noticed that around her neck was really red and swelling in lumps all down her chest. I took her to the emergency vet and they gave her benedryl and a steroid shot. She has a mild case of MVD so the steroid shot was in an extremely low dose. The vet said there is probably some underlying problem that caused her reaction. I'm a little worried because she has been biting and scratching ALOT lately. My vet thinks it's a flea bite and shrugged me off, but I think she's just dismissing me or just doesnt care (yes - im in search of a new vet). So, I don't know if that had something to do with her reaction or not.

Today she is still just laying around, but the redness and swelling is basically gone. Do you think she's just tired from two vet visits yesterday or should I still be worried?

Has anyone else experienced a reaction like this before?
