Brushes Does anyone know of a stockist for Maden brushes in the UK, please? I've seen them recommended over on the grooming & showing boards but haven't been able to locate a stockist over here. xx Meggie

You're not having much luck with this are you, Meggie. I was thinking that maybe someone in the US would send one of these brushes to you? Probably cheaper than paying the postage and packing rates that the on line US stores charge. The members over there are so helpful and I am sure one of them would offer to do it for you. Just A thought. I use a Chris Christensen brush and I would also like a softish pure bristle brush to give Toots extra shine. They are expensive so will have to wait a while. I have definitely given up on the Plush Puppy shampoo and the conditioner. I tried them at different strengths of dilution but it still didn't work. Just not suitable for Tootsy's coat. The Swishy coat is good as it makes her hair straighter, but it soon goes curly again within a day. I think it is mainly for shows and not an everyday thing. I feel I have spent a lot of money and got nothing in return. I will put them all on ebay and see if I can recoup some of the money as I have used so little of them. I know that others find the products very good. Luv Yvonne xxx

Hi Yvonne. You & I will both be broke with this grooming lark I've spent a fortune this month. I got one of the Chris Christensen Gold pin brushes as well as an Isinis one, then the Summerwinds & some other bits & bobs. I'm still pleased with the Summerwinds so I'm now waiting for a delivery of a gallon of it, along with some Cowboy Magic & some Ice on Ice (to try & solve the knot problem) plus some bows, thought I'd buy proper ones then see if I could copy them. That's a good suggestion for the brush but I think I might try to resist buying yet another for a bit I got two great Kent bristle brushes, rubber pad, at TKMaxx recently for around £5 each, have you tried there? All I can say is thank goodness the Skyes don't cost this much to groom! On top of that I'm off to the vet again with Button today. Been up all night with him struggling to breathe. He's been doing so well on the Piriton all summer but something's not right now. xx Meggie

Hi Meggie So sorry I did not reply to your post yesterday. I was just about to when someone arrived and I never got back to the computer. How is Button? It must have been very frightening to have him struggling for air!! What did the vet prescribe? Tootsy was a bit chesty the other night, too, and she was sneezing a little, as well. Apart from that, she is well. I am not sure if I should treat her with antihistamines or not? What do you think? Wow, the Bain de Terre sounds amazing !!! Wonder if you can get it over here. Oh dear, you are right, we are well on the way to going broke with all these products!! I find it hard to resist another 'amazing product' in case it is THE one. Please would you let me know how you find Cowboy Magic, Meggie. I have been toying with the idea of trying that one for some time, but haven't got the credit card out, yet! You must be pleased with the Summerwinds conditioner to order a gallon of it. I am happy with the Ice on Ice (even though I wasn't at first) and it has a sunscreen in it, which I like, as I don't want her hair going brassy in the summer. Mind you, there does not seem to be any danger of that happening - it rained here all weekend and was DARK at 7.00pm?!!! The wind was howling around the house, too. I don't know how I am going to get through another no show summer! Thanks for letting me know about the Kent bristle brushes for £5!! The Kent brushes are so good, too. Do you find that it gives their coat a nice shine? I have a bristle brush for my hair and it definitely makes it shine more. It isn't soft enough for Toots as when I tried to brush her with it she ran off. Normally she just sits and endures her hair being brushed, but she wouldn't have my bristle brush near her. Hope Button is okay - please let me know, Meggie. Thanks again for the info. Luv & Hugs Yvonne xxx

I got my Madan brush from Cindy Fern-King. She is a member on a Maltese forum I belong to. Why don't you email her and see if she ships overseas? c.fernking@comcast.net Madan brushes are the best brushes by far and I've tried them all.

Thank you for that link, Ladymom. It's very kind of you. Do you have a Maltese? I think they are gorgeous & looked into getting one but they are £1000+ here for a puppy according to the converter on my computer that's $1,918.903 !! Hi Yvonne, only just seen your post, sorry, was busy yesterday. Button's back on steroids. Bit concerned though as they don't seem to be working as well as before, he's still very snotty & snuffly, though his breathing's eased a little bit thank goodness. Could enter him for the olympics with his snoring at the moment It was very worrying. He was frightened too. He got on my knee & was almost clinging, looking at me with terrified eyes & trying to breathe through his mouth. It was really awful. I'd boiled a kettle to get some steam which helped him a bit till we could get to the vet. I thought the pollen count was down at the moment. It should be with all this rain! It's been awful here too lately, black as anything at the weekend & absolutely bucketing it down. We had thunder as well & the lightening was dancing across the hills! Why not try Tootsie on Piriton if she's struggling? My vet said it can't do any harm. You could just give her a tiny bit of a tablet, Button has 1/8.....often just dust! I put it on a bit of pate & he queues up at the fridge for it I'm going to try a bit of Lavender oil in a burner, someone said that might help. Looks like he might have to go back to the vets later this week. They only gave me 7 days tablets, he's had 4 & isn't much better. My order for Ice on Ice etc hasn't turned up yet. I ordered a gallon of the Summerwinds as you add a cupfull to the rinsing water & my bottle isn't going to last long. The Kent brushes are fine, they do make their hair shine & Ellie doesn't object to them....like Tootsie she does to some of the others. Sensitive little blossoms eh? The ones she likes best are those antique ones I picked up cheap, very very soft, only they don't make much impression on mats, perhaps why she likes them! xx Meggie

Yes, Lady is a Maltese. They may be a little more than Yorkies everywhere, I think. For a female from a reputable breeder, the starting price is about $2,000-2,500 and they go up from there. Males are about $1,000 less. | |

Hi Meggie I am so sorry to hear that Button is not improving on the steroids, as much as before. The vet will have to give him a bronchial dilator (sp.?!) and the sooner the better, by the sounds of it. I wouldn't wait until the steroids are finished, Meggie, as it is not good for him to be like this. This medication may make him shake - my daughter had to have it for asthma and it make her tremble. She also had steroids, but had to have the b.d. as well. I wonder if Button is allergic to mould spores, as well as pollen, because (down here, anyway) there is a lot of fungus on the plants from the damp, warm weather. So even though the pollen count is low, the mould spore count will be very high, I should imagine. Does your vet not have an emergency surgery where you could take Button immediately should he have another severe attack like the one you mentioned. You should not have to cope with it yourself, as it is considered an emergency. Steam does help I know, as I also used it with my daughter, but when Button is struggling to breathe through his mouth, he really needs to be on oxygen and stronger medication very fast. I really feel for you, Meggie, it must be so upsetting for you to see him like this, poor little boy. Please let me know how things go with him. Toots has stopped sneezing and the wheezing has also gone, but it returns every now and then. I will try the Piriton next time I notice it.. What fun cutting a Piriton tablet into 8!! I must look for the tablet splitter you told me about. Gosh a whole CUP of conditioner to rinse our dogs in!!! No wonder you got a gallon. Is a gallon very expensive? All for now, Meggie, and give Button a cuddle from me. Luv & Hugs Yvonne xxxx

He's quite a bit better today. He doesn't need a bronchial dilator, Yvonne. That's the funny thing. My son has asthma too, has had it from being a toddler & been on all sorts of medication over the years, so I'm used to dealing with that too. But every time Button has seen the vet, even this time when his breathing was bad, they've tested his chest expecting it to be affected but it isn't, not at all. His chest has been clear as a bell every single time. The problem is all in his nose & a bit in his sinuses That's why the vet says it's Hay Fever & it's medication to try to take the inflammation down that they give him, along with antihistamines. He's seen 3 of the vets at the practice & they all say the same, it's the practice boss who usually sees him now, says he's a bit of a rum case to sort out & wishes he could just get him to give his nose a good blow! Well, my order still hasn't turned up. Beginning to wonder what's happened to it. xx Meggie

So sorry to hear that your son suffers from asthma as well. It is an scary illness, isn't it. My daughter tested positive for every one of the things they tested her for - including the mould spores!!! I got the wrong impression when you said that Button was struggling to breathe through his mouth. That is why I thought he needed a b.d. It must be a great relief to know that his lungs are not affected and that it is only a blocked nose - although it is still miserable for the little chap. He is a real puzzle isn't he - I wonder why he is not responding to treatment. I do hope that the vet finds something that really helps him soon. Would you let me know how Button does and if they do find something that works for him? Isn't this weather dreadful, Meggie!!! We had heavy rain all night and strong blustery winds as well. It continued today, but not as much rain as during the night. I actually felt a little cold last night! Usually I don't even have my duvet over me as it is warm enough without it, but last night I had to use it as I felt quite chilly. Luv & hugs Yvonne xxx

Luckily just about the only things my son was found not to be allergic to was dogs & cats! This weather really is dreadful. Yesterday was the first day it hadn't rained up here in ages, unfortunately the rain's back today. The garden & our fields where the geese etc live are sodden & flooded in places, even though we live half way up the Pennines! I'll let you know how Button does, he's a bit better again today. My parcel has just arrived so can experiment with the Cowboy Magic & Ice on Ice xx Meggie
