Smile do I really have to do this ??

hi everyone,
A lady stopped me on our walk with our 4 month old baby and said she used to breed yorkies. She said i had to cut the fur all around her ears otherwise she would have balance problems, is this true ? also i must trim or tie up the hair out of her eyes, not that its long at the moment, any advice would be welcome thanks in advance

Welcome to YT! I was told to keep the upper third trimmed to prevent Toto's little ears from flopping back down. When your baby's hair on top grows longer, you will need to band it to keep it out of her eyes and enable her to see. You could keep it cut short if you prefer. I was also told to avoid cutting it really short around her eyes ... the little stubby hair can stick in their eyes and cause eye infections.

We have some excellent breeders/groomers here who can give you good advice. I hope you enjoy the forum, we would love to hear all about your baby and see pictures!

If you want them to stand then the hair would need to be trimmed but if you don't care or they are standing already, you don't have to trim the ear hair. I let Ellie's ear hair grow with the rest of her body.

I dont even NEAR claim to be an expert, but look at this precious thing!! My Baby girl has never had her ears cut short(only trimmed) and her ears are beautiful! She has no balance problems and I adore her pretty little "wings"...
Good Luck with your baby!

Default do i really have to do this ?

yhankyou for ur advice !! It seems everyone when we go out walking is an expert on what we should do with "kinnykins" I wont trim her ears only a bit as she gets older, they look fine to us , they do stand and flop at the moment so what will be will be. I will trim her eyes to keep the hair away as im not into the "cousin it " look!!!!!!

Trimming the hair on the top third of the ears will help them stand if they're a bit floppy.

As to it affecting the dog's balance.....what a load of rubbish!!

Good grief, my Skyes with their big, frilly , butterfly ears would be staggering around like drunks

As for poor little Papillons......perhaps that's why Edna always carries Tootsie around on Emmerdale eh?

Question

Strange ideas some people !
Listen to Meggie's advice...she is speaking sense...and if you see the lady again, say thankyou for your ideas, but I have no problems at all with my pup the way she is.
I have never trimmed any of my dog's ears and they stand fine ! Debra x

We cut the hair on Roxy's ears because we like how it looks (I love the perky little ears), and so she doesn't get any debris caught in it...but I don't think she'd have balance problems with a little extra.

I have had dogs before and when walking our pup people do make a fuss of her and she loves it she is very friendly, but i am getting down about comments, the latest one is dont have that bell on her (a little cat bell ) as its not good for her sensitive hearing !! good grief.. we have it because we can hear where she is and we wont tread on her, does anyone else have a little bell on their baby ??

Confused

This woman seems like a nightmare. I've had people comment on my pups and they come on strong. One man said I shouldn't tie their hair up in a topknot as they have sensitive eyes and the hair over them was made to protect their vision. Bah! Humbug! I want to see their eyes. Fortunately I live in a big city and have never seen that man again. You don't seem to have that luck. Stick to your guns.

Hi there and hello, I would not take things seriously that people say when you are out walking with your little one, people love to give you their opinions all the time. Our little ones have never had their ears trimmmed and they are fine. People say things to pass the time of day with you and sometimes you also get negative comments...

At least you can come on here and get some good advice and support. Good luck with your little one.
