Default Tootsy and, ahem, her gas problem

Hello everyone

Tootsy has a big gas problem at the moment and can clear a room in under 10 seconds! The funny thing I just had to share with you is this; when she gets a whiff of her err.. gas (sorry don't know how to put this politely, ha ha!!) she looks so startled , turns her head around quickly and barks ferociously at her tail and then runs out of the room!! Its hilarious!

Luv

One of our sheepdogs used to do that.
He'd let off a belter, turn round & sniff, then get up & leave the room

At the moment she is on plain chicken breast and a little rice. The vet does not want her to have anything else for 6 weeks. She has colitis but is doing well apart from the gas!!.

Strange that chicken would give them gas! I thought it would be easily
digested.

My old one can't tolerate chicken at all. It always makes her sick.

I think Max has an intolerance for chicken. I'm going to leave it out of his diet for a while, just to see if things improve.

Strange, I don't like chicken, I've always felt sick after eating it.

My vet says he regularly sees dogs who are allergic to chicken.
He recommends turkey or venison instead.

i thought "a bit posh, venison" but he says Burns do a good Venison & Brown Rice kibble. He also recommends the Turkey & Rice James Wellbeloved, not the lamb as even that can cause problems in some.

If you want to cook he says best of all is turkey with plain boiled potato.

I'm going to try this as I've just had Ellie back to him with the trots again & she's been on nothing but chicken or Royal Canin Yorkshire

Max hasn't had chicken in his diet at all in two and a half days. He hasn't had gas for two days either. It looks as though I've found the culprit, thank goodness. His gas was a deadly killer.

I have just been in contact with a pet nutritionist and she says that chicken is often a problem for dogs. She has put Tootsie on a low allergy diet which consists of 3oz of venison ( she says this is excellent for sensitive tummies in dogs) or rabbit, with half a cup of potato or rice and half a cup of any squash, with half a cup of green beans. I have to put the veg in a blender for a couple of seconds to break it up into tiny pieces and then add it to the chopped or minced meat. She also has to take probiotics, a quarter of a teaspoon of flaxseed oil building up to 1 full teaspoon (Tootsy is sensitive to fish, which the nutritionist says is practically unheard of, so she cannot have fish oils), a calcium supplement and a general vitamin supplement which I still have to get. She will stay on this for three weeks and then I can try turkey as a change and carrot. She says some dogs are sensitive to carrots! She can have pears for a treat. She wouldn't eat her pear tonight, though, and she normally loves pears.
She has been happy on this diet so far. I have to weigh her each week to see if her weight stays stable and adjust her starch if it isn't. I will let you know how things go in case it is helpful to anyone else on the forum.

My vet's been recommending venison to me just this week for Ellie's trots.
He says Burns Venison & Brown Rice kibble is brilliant for sensitive tummies.
Thought that might help if you can't always get time to cook.

I've been advised on another forum that, even though my vet said it's hard to get hold of in the shops, Burns help line are brilliant & you can order direct, or they have a search on there for local stockists. There seem to be quite a few if you don't live in the back of beyond like me.

When I said I'd been giving her home cooked food for now till she's better he said use potato instead of rice, and turkey in preference to chicken.

Thanks for this advice, Meggie. I will ask Burns for a sample of their venison and rice and see if they will send it to me.

You obviously have a more up-to-date vet than I have, as he seems to know a lot about sensitivities. I wish I could find a vet like him as my vet was hopeless with diet advice. Tootsy seems to prefer the potato to the rice, so maybe she can sense that it is better for her.
