Default First Time Yorkie Owner

Hello everyone! Just want to introduce myself to the group. I am the proud new mommy of Deegan , a 10 week old Yorkie. I have had dogs all my life, but never such a small little guy. He is very fiesty to say the least, that is when he is not sleeping. It will be a week tomorrow that we've had him, and he's seems to be settling in quite nicely.

Two problems that we are trying to overcome are getting him used to his crate, and of course potty training. They both seem like impossible challenges right now, so if anyone has any advice for a new mom, please don't hesitate.
With the crate he cries continuously , and as for potty training - it seems like even though we wait outside for him to go for twenty minutes, he waits until the minute we get in the house to go (and not on the paper either.)

Please send me any suggestions.
Thanks for the help! Talk to you soon.

Hi there Deegan's Mom, I'm Rory's Ma.

Being a recent new mom myself, my advice to you would be to have lots of patience. for the pup and yourself. And because we love them so much, that's not a problem.

The crate was not a problem for us, but I would continue to try to use it if I were you, it's very hand for travelling even. One thing I wish I had done when Rory was not trained was confine him to one room, (that the floors were easy to clean). I barricaded him in the kitchen for awhile but being the terrrier he is, he of course got out. But he never did or has since messed in the kitchen, where he spends most of his time with me. I was at one point thinking of getting a playpen and keeping him in that. My husband told me not to buy a gate, that he would make one, but of course that never happened. I got Rory 18th of December, so we started out potty training in the winter, not a good idea, but we have made progress, slowly but surely, and I know you will too. It just takes awhile, but don't underestimate him, these little fellas are really smart. Also, you have to remember that their insides are very small and they have to mature a bit to be able to hold on to go outside. I'd just take him right back out if he'd gone when he came inside. Just say no and then take him right outside again. He'll catch on, don't worry about that. He's still very young.

These little dogs are just the very best, I'm a cat person myself and have 3, but always wanted a little dog and I found the perfect little one to share our home with.
When I look into his dear little face I just melt. Good luck!! RM

I have successfully bladder trained 15 week old Carter. We are currently working on bowel training...I can never catch the little man, he is so sneaky!

My answer would be CONSISTENCY. I bring my dogs out every hour and command them to "go potty". Carter does it as soon as I say so, Lexi (who's one year old) is going through her "teenage years" and goes when SHE feels like it, although she is 100% trained. When I am not home, they both hold it (only a few hours at a time since their bladder's are so small). Remember that this is training. Treats play a big part in any training. I started by telling them "go potty and you'll get a treat". Now that they're trained, I have replaced the treat with praise. These little guys LOVE to make you happy. I praise and clap and say "good boy/girl, go potty" when they do. They see how happy I am and make sure I'm watching when they go! My neighbours probably think I should be committed.

As for the crate training...neither of mine are crate trained but I have read suggestions on this forum. Use the search button and I'm sure you'll find them.

Welcome to YT! This is a great place to be.

Yes, patience is it. It took a while to get into a potty routine and sleeping schedule with Brady. With the crate thing it was amazing...there would be crying for weeks then all of sudden one night she put herself to bed in it! We were thrilled...she just walked in there and went to sleep....however, now a couple months later the crate is gone and her bed is our bed - we like having her there.

Potty training is still a struggle for us even after 4 months. We chose to paper train her...however she also will go outside if we are on a walk. She has accidents now and then in the house but I am convinced it is just because she's too lazy to go from one end of the house to the pad.... These little guys are SO SMART and head strong...which is what makes them so cute!

Gotta love these little babies. Adorable pic of Lexi and Carter. Anyone from ottawa?

Hi Deegan's Mom, how is it going? How's the little fella doing? Just had a few days away with my little guy. I have found such pleasure travelling with my little man, he has been to the Opinicon Lodge on the Rideau Canal and up to Pembroke to visit relatives. He is such a great little companion and gets along with everyone. That's what you have to look forward to. I rented a little SUV to go to Pembroke with and he went in his little crate the whole way up, but he could see out through the front seats. That's why a little crate training is handy. Also at the Opinicon, I put him in his little crate when we went for our meals. It just prevents any potential problems ie. having to go potty, or escaping when the staff may have come in to the cabin. It's just a little safety tool for the puppy, they are tucked away secure while you leave them for a short time. I also gave him just a tiny bit of children's liquid gravol for the trip to Pembroke. He was fine, had a little break in Smiths Falls and away we went.

Hope all is well, Rory's Ma.
