| suggestions on food? Hey I have a 4.5month old yorkie and I have been feeding her Purina Pro Plan Puppy and was wondering what everyone else has been feeding there pups? Also how do you feel about making your own dog food? i was considering it for when she was an adult but Im concerned with her teeth and I know dry food is good since yorkies have a history of tooth decay. much appreciated! | I feed Blue Buffalo Basics to my dog, Daisy. She does very well on it. I like that the the first ingredient is deboned salmon. They also have another dry kibble with beboned turkey as the first ingredient. Anyway, it's all natural, healthy ingredients without any fillers or anything that is usually suspected in starting allergies. Wellness is another really good dog food. I tried it with Daisy but it proved to be too dry for her and her stools were too hard and painful to pass.....but that's just with her, another dog would probably do great on it. |

| Purina is only a 2 star dog food out of 6 stars..here's a link to see the quality of the food you feed or are thinking of feeding... Dog Food Ratings by Brand Anything you can buy at a grocery store or walmart...etc..is usually only 2 stars...terribly low quality food...hardly any nutrition in it at all. If you go to a Pet specialty shop you can usually find high quality dog foods.. My girls prefer Canadai...grain free....I've tried ALOT of premium foods!! they are very picky eaters..it's only a 5 star...but superior compared to what I used to feed a long time ago, which was pedigree. Some stores offer free samples of premium foods to try.

oops noticed my mistake....I meant to say 2 stars out of 5! miss clicked! I hope you find a high quality food for your baby....good nutrition is KEY in maintaining good overall health for your yorkie! The Canadai brand I use is 4 star...however I found a quality canned that is 5 star...so going to switch soon!

I feed Instinct which is a 6 star on the site I listed above. I am paying $13.50 a bag and the bag is about 4 1/2 pounds. However, when you feed a better food, you will have to feed less of it. Therefore, the expense really it not so bad. Instinct is 1 3/4 cup for a 50 pound dog. Since Rosie is only 5 pounds, she only gets 1.4 oz of the food (I think that is what it is!!). Honestly, I think it is better in the long run. This bag of food will last me a couple of months.

Many chain pet stores now carry good quality food... PetCo for example carries Natural Balance, Merrick, and Wellness which are all very good foods. I think you should find a store near you and go in and see what they carry and how much it costs.

| Taste Of The Wild (TOTW) is a quality food that runs lower in price compared to most premium foods. The larger bags are roughly $1/lb. |

YorkieTalk Newbie! | I tried so many different brands of dog food, untill finally I found one that my lil Roxy likes, it Blue Buffalo Small Breed Adult Chicken and Brown Rice Recipe for small breed dogs. She absolutely loves this food, I'm just happy to have found one that she likes!!! I also once in a while will boil some chicken breast and some plain white rice and she loves that too. |

| I started my little pup on Royal Canin puppy food (because that is what his breeder suggested), only after meeting another Yorkie mom who explained that the eye goop he gets could be directly effected by his food, I switched to Orijen puppy food. I educated myself a little bit and learned that Orijen is MUCH better, I had no idea. The price was either the same or literally a couple of dollars more - NO BIG DEAL. He's not a big eater either way, He eats about 1/4 to 1/2 cup a day and is a good healthy 4.5 or 5lbs. He's super healthy, just not a big food eater (loves his healthy wellness and 100% dried chicken treats though) lol. I think these little dogs derserve the very best. I somehow feel that if I give him a 5 star food instead of a 3 star food I could actually end up saving money on vet bills later, that's just my thinking... So far so good... There's my 2 cents |
