Question Dog Park Experience??

My city has opened a temporary dog park until the new dog park is open.
It consists of two chain link fences side by side with one side for little dogs one side for big dogs. The people are so excited and grateful to have a dog park many are trying hard to keep it nice and friendly.

Anyone else have a dog park in your town? If so how is it in your town?

We don't have one in our little town but last year, I went to visit Villette in Houston. They have a WONDERFUL dog park there. It was pretty much set up the same way...large dogs in one area and the smaller ones in another. We saw this cute little male yorkie and he was so friendly...so was his cute owner!

We don't have a dog park in our town but we do have a dog park in the next big city and it is is very close to where we live, I just have not been there because I am not sure where exactly it is, I am new in this town and don't know where anything is yet. But there is a dog park in another big city in the opposite direction, massillon, and we have been to that dog park several times. They love going to the dog park, it is their favorite thing to do. I have not seen many yorkies there but I do know there are alot of fox terriers and jack russell terriers there and everyone gets along great.

Ya I was very surprised how the dogs got along. The owners watch them very carefully.

How interesting; I’m totally new to the dog park thing. Thanks for starting this thread.

It sounds like a great idea as long as everyone gets along. But, are they safe for small dogs? Could that be why Yorkies aren’t present in some?

Most dog parks have a section for small dogs and one for big dogs. So you won't have to worry about your little yorkie or toy breed being trampled or attacked by a bigger dog.

I like my yorkie to play with a small chiauaha or small yorkie dog. So many dogs are too big for her to play with right now.

Default dog park

Last night a small jack russell terrier showed its teeth at my yorkie at dog park. My yorkie was so upset I brought her home and no way am I going to dog park unless a small yorkie or chicahua dog is present.

Then some lady in the big dog park side started cussing at a roteweiler owner because his dog was showing dominating behavior to her older hound dog so after she cussed out the roteweiler owner she decided to come over to the small dog side of the park and their is no one to stop her. These big dog owners keep bring the big dogs to the small dog side when the going gets tough on the big dog side and they could run over my little yorkie very quickly and do damage. The dog park has been getting out of hand. I have to stop for awhile.

Its comforting to be around people that love pets and the conversation is safely on the dogs with no pressure to me. It was a fun inexpensive evening for my daughter and I for the summer. Now I'm frighented to bring my yorkie there too many new people and dogs are at the park. Our park opened about a month ago and more people are getting the word that the park is opened.

We have a 2 dog runs/parks here in Staten Island. We brought Oliver to both. One (Wolfe's Pond Park) had only one large fenced in area for all size dogs. We didn't like it that much, due to the fact that we couldn't separate him from very large breeds. The other one (Silver Lake Park)has 2 separate fenced in areas, side by side, one for large and one for small breeds. We like this one alot better. People are generally very nice, and cooperate in keeping a watch on their own dogs, and keeping the place clean. It's really alot of fun to watch them run around, free, with other dogs, socializing, and making friends.

Unhappy

I've been to about 5 dog parks and I generally hate them. I would stop going all together, but sometimes merlot really needs to get out and be around other dogs.
The experiences that I have had there are fights between people, fights between dogs, big dogs on the little side, snobby dog owners and ones who just don't care. Our most horrific experience was being attacked by a pitbull. Both me and my dog were rolling around on the ground with it trying to get it off my dog and the owner just stood by. After it was all over and I got his info, all he could say was "Doesn't this kinda thingf happen all the time here".
Not to mention how dirty some of them are. I bathe Merlot everytime we leave one of those places. Even if they appear clean, how clean can they be?

I have had nothing but pleasant experience at the 2 local dog parks. The people are mostly very nice and are aware of their dogs behavior and size. Yes, some dogs get into a little "rumble" but the owners are quick to intervene and usually the aggressive dog leaves.

Both parks I go to have separate areas for the little guys. The largest dog I've seen with the little ones are Bassetts or large breed puppies. I did see a golden with the little guys once but she was very old and just seemed to enjoy the attention for the little tykes.

With any type of park, it's the people who makes the difference. For owners to curse at each other is not acceptable and I hope to never witness it.

I hope your parks situation changes. Hopefully it's just a novelty right now and many of the rude people will not be returning. I would go back in a month or so and check it out. The change in the atmosphere may be a pleasant surprise for you.

in the dog park here no one keeps the gos in the right places
people are like
"oh my dog is so calm, she likes small dogs"
but a lot of small dogs can be easily frightened by a big dog!!!
drives me nuts
